Serpentine belt jumping, 05 5.9 L

In 45K miles I have had the serpentine belt try to come off twice and jump clear off this weekend. All three occurred during starting. The first two times, the belt tried to come off and pealed the outer (radiator) side grooves off which wrapped around lower pulleys. Dealers replaced the belt (charging me the second time) and can find nothing wrong.

Any similar problems or solutions? I am taking it back to the dealer tomorrow.

I have an 05 with about the same miles the belt jumped forward last week on shut down and stripped the front 2 grooves off when I restarted. No apparent problems with the system all the idlers are good and all seem to be aligned. The only thought I have is I shut it off with the AC on and it was about 90°F outside maybe the high load when the motor stopped caused the belt to slack enough to make it slap and it jumped forward. Seems hard to imagine but that is the best I come up with.

I have not had a belt jumping problem with my 2006 Dodge.



In the past I did have the problem with another truck, changed the belt a couple of times, did not solve the problem. Finally, I changed the idler pulley, never had the problem again.



When I checked the pulley it seemed fine so I disregarded the possibility of it causing the problem. Finally I had someone else shut down the truck a few times while I watched everything articulate. Thats when I was the idler bind/torque slightly when it came to an abrupt stop, on restart it ate the belt.



It may be what your trucks idler pulley is doing. I had a fellow who is a mechanic tell me that it took 3 brand new idlers to get one that was manufactured correctly, don't know if this same manufacturing flaw exists in the Dodge idlers, but it does seem to be a problem with those manufactured aftermarket.

Did you get the Alt belt chirp TSB done? Dunno if thats why but the new pulley releives alot of stress on the belt.

Had a similar problem with my old F-150. Idler pully looked OK but was eating belts. I just went ahead and bought a new pulley and that was the end of it.

is the alignment pin in correctly?

might want to double check

I think its a 1/2 in or 13 mm bolt

The new belt lasted only 800 miles this time. I went to the dealer to see what they knew about the problem, the mechanic said the TSB that Matt mentioned above should fix that problem. After an angry conversation with a service manager they decided it was covered by warranty, hope this fixes the problem. I really don’t understand how something that has been identified as a problem on a TSB and is causing the belts to shred could not be a warranty covered items

It is, as long as the warranty period is still in effect.

However only 800 miles sounds like another problem to me.

had that problem with my 03, belt was jumping aroung and making a ticking noise..... spring was weak in the belt tensioner after 200,000km the next week my buddies 03 did the same thing. . close to the same milage... put on new tensioner and all good!!

Had the problem with my 2005 when it was new. After several trips to the dealer and two chewed up belts, they decided to replace the power steering pump. Though the pulley was true, they felt that was the problem. 35k miles later, no problems... I can't explain it.

DPashko, when you replaced your belt tensioner, did you replace the complete part or just the pulley wheel?
