The belt on my 94 has been running two groves off the pulley on the a/c compressor. I assumed it was the belt tensioner, as I know they go bad sometimes. Got a new one from Cummins and replace it to no avail, still is running two groves toward the back of the pulley. While I had the belt off, I checked the idler pulley and it was O-K. This can't be good for the belt as the edge of it is running on the flange of the pulley. Any body have any ideas? I did have the compressor replaced and wonder if it may be the wrong one causing misalignment?

Thanks

Michael

Michael, did you replace the entire tensioner? Sometimes the pulley is fine but the pivot is worn causing the tensioner to be cocked a little. You can hardy see the off angle but it will try to derail your belt.

Examine the pulleys very carefully. Look for more wear accross the grooves or backside on one side or another. The offending pulley will look different than the others. If they all look the same or normal try spraying some layout dye accross an area on each pulley and run it a little while and check again.

Visually check the alignment the beat you can.

If all the idlers and pulleys are nice and tight when you feel them, it sure seems like that new compressor might have a problem.

Thanks for the help, fellows. I do have some spray layout die and will try that, good idea. Did you move from Dayton, Doug?

Michael

Loosen the bolts that hold the compressor to the motor and see how much "play" there is. They may have tightened them with the compressor not in line correctly when they replaced it.
