On my 2004. 5 I have had two serpentine belts replaced at 10,000 and 21,000 miles by the dealer. The front 1/4 " of the belt gets torn off and raps around the fan. The dealer doesn't see any alignment problems. Has anyone else seen this problem.

Do a search here and on DTR under belts - many of us have had this problem, ALTHOUGH, most of us with new belts (my original went at 5400 miles) have had no additional issues (knock woodd). I have about 14,000 miles on the replacement - so far, so good. Like you, my dealer found no alignment issues, but I have been paranoid ever since.

There is apparently a fix for this now, which involves relacing the alternator pulley with an "overrun" pulley. This will help eliminate the "chirp" on shutdown, which is common to ALL diesels, BUT puts a strain on the belt.

It is VERY easy to install these incorrectly. There is no room for error on a couple of the pullies as well.

Do a search on posts for "Sag2" here, and you should find his thread. Hope this helps.

I took my 05' in for three new injectors at 13,000 and they replaced the alternator pulley. They said it was wore out. My belt jumped one notch at about 3,000 and I justed jumped it back and it stayed until I took it in for the injectors. I do have a spare belt under the seat just in case.

Mine started squealing at 200, miles and fraying at 950 miles. Took 2 trips to the dealer to get it fixed, but at 10K, no probelms with the new one yet.

I think it's a good idea to keep a spare with you, I do.

I'm really amazed by all the people who have chimed in here that have had the fraying problem.

I too, carry a spare belt.

Nothing new. I have been running this belt for about 1000 miles so far. Was just wondering if anyone had the same problem and their dealer had come up with a fix. A guy I work with said he had heard that they need to replace the whole belt tensioner to fix the problem. If it happens again I will insist the dealer does this.

My 04 1/2 has a build date 02/04 and has not had any belt problems with 32,000 on the clock now. Maybe a bad batch of alt. pullies?

+1. I have 30k, but exact same info as above... no problems.
