The belt tensioner on my RV is a POS. It and another one like it have had problems with this thing. Apparently the pulses from the firing "jerk" the belt enough in operation to make a lot of wear on the pivot, it gets sloppy quick and then runs the idler pully edge into the belt, creaming the belt. Our solution is to cut off several ribs of the belt and run it on the front side of the engine pulleys.

Surely this has been corrected by someone with something, attached is a photo to let you see the type I am talking about

for me it is hard to tell from the pic but i know on our isl/isc and m-11

at work all have a part up date to them i may be able to check if you pm me or post the serial number of your engine (i will try) just from what i see it looks like the older style

Hey that would be wonderful. I have not been able to see a data plate on the engine, I must stand on my head to see it I guess. It was new in 1988 though, if that is any help. I notice in all the books I have, they show a slightly different one, the support arm seems to go on the outside of the pulley, not on the inside as mine does. I am sure Cummins would not have allowed this one to continue to exist!

I need the engine data anyhow, will continue to compare book to motor and get some info some way.

don

i never did get a ser #

but cummins now untill the end of jan

has a 10. 00 rebate on tensioners and idlers as well

as 25. 00 on recon water pumps

I am still trying!! They put the darned plate where there is an upright brace thing, and the ONLY way to see it is to reach a digital back in there and shoot blind. I took a half dozen photos of it, but could not read anything on them. I am going to try again this morning with some black shoe polish to fill the stamping of data. Might have to chisel the plate off to see it!

According to Cummins web site, it is over 300 miles from me to a Cummins dealer, don't know if they mail stuff out or not. I suppose I will about have to try one to see if it will even fit, not sure just who made this one.

yep

i show the build date 8/21/1987

and the tensioner having been updated 6 times sence it was new

i show current p/n of 3978022

i hope this helps

You are the best! Thanks much. Looks like perhaps Cummins realized it was a POS as well as me. You are correct on the build date, that agrees with the tag.

You don't happen to be able to access price and availability of that part do you?

Thank You Time

RBergman thanks again for the help, here is a updated photo with the new 3978022 installed. Sure is one heck of an improvement!
