Another thing to look for is fraying of the belt on one edge. If you see fraying on an inside edge of the belt, it usually means a bearing is going bad in one of the components, and is putting more load on one side of the belt. A misaligned accessory will do the same thing.

If you replace it I suggest the Gatorback belt available at several local part stores. Be sure to use a "LONG" 3/8 ratchet or breaker bar. I used my long torquewhench. An additional person to position the belt is also helpful.

What is the best way to tell if the serpentine belt needs replacement. I have longitudinal wear showing up on the belt. I would hesitate to call them cracks. Looks more like pitting. The service manual procedure looks simple enough to follow. Any helpful advice on what to avoid? TIA

If there are cracks running crossways to the belt and they are like knife-cuts, replace the belt.
The belt is held tight by a tensioning arm that you use a 3/8th's drive ratchet to release the tension then slip off the belt.

I've found it best to use a 3/8" ratchet with a cheater bar. You need to get a few clicks to move the tensioner enough. You can thread the belt though all the grooved pulleys and get it in place before moving the tensioner, after you retract the tensioner just slip the belt under the smooth idler that the top of the belt runs on. With the cheater it's easy to hold the tensioner with your left elbow giving you both hands to work with.
