Service center recommendations to perform Y78 CP4 -> CP3 recall recommendations and experiences

Hey all, hoping to get some recommendations for what Denver area, preferably south or sw, dealership to have perform the Y78 CP4 to CP3 recall. I’ve got a 20’ 3500 HO/Aisin that I picked up a month ago, after 16 years of being behind a Dmax, hoping to have a good experience with this Cummins. Comparing my truck next to an identical model year HO, my HPFP definitely is noisier and has a varying rhythm that the other truck doesn’t exhibit. I’d like to at least start the process of getting it scheduled, but I’m worried about finding a dealer and tech that is going to do nice job on the swap. I’ve read quite a few posts about people who have had the recall done and the quality of the work was pretty bad; power steering lines loose, loose wires/lines with no ties, and other odd drivability issues afterwards. I’ve also seen some people that have noticed an improvement afterwards so, I’d like to give myself the best chance I can to get the job done right. So, has anyone around Denver had the Y78 recall done, where? What was your experience with the dealership, quality of work, and what did you notice about driving with the new pump, if anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there any other updates software wise to the TCM or Other control modules I should mention to have performed as well? Thanks in advance!

@Elkmeat, Welcome to TDR! You should be able to put VIN in a website to see if it's been done. Can't recall off the top of my head. Should be able to search here on TDR. I would go to your RAM dealerships and have a knock and talk. That way you'll have a good idea. Look at how many RAMs are on the lot, especially emergency equipment. Never know what might be in your backyard! Think you'll like the Cummins in these trucks! Need to get AlfaOBD software, security bypass cable and MX+ Bluetooth dongle. Alfa runs on Android phone/tablet or a windows laptop. If you use an iPhone, just get an Android tablet to run AlfaOBD. Software is around $50, cable around $60 and dongle is around $100. Let's you change settings and read codes for troubleshooting! Lot's of info on Alfa here and elsewhere, just ask.

Thanks for the advice! It hasn’t had the recall done yet. I’ll talk to some service departments and feel them out. I will also look into the Alfa OBD software as you recommended, thanks! In the meantime if anyone has and personal experiences or rec’s I’m all ears!

Welcome to the TDR..

I tried to buy a 2020 GMC Denali (long term GM guy)... but the RAM is hands down miles ahead in most areas, I guess thats why I've owned Ram trucks since 2001. Don't worry too much about the recall, techs should be good at it by now, my truck was in and out in a day, no issues thus far. I called many big dealers here in NC, most were months out but my local small town dealer was able to pencil me in within the same week... At that time they were doing one a week and it went really well, just my experience with it.

I went local as well, called on a Saturday and got it in the same day, I had it back the following Monday. Running very strong and they did a nice clean job. Welcome to the TDR

Man, I wish that’s what one of the service centers would tell me.. in the last few days I’ve called 5 different Dealers in the Denver area, everyone has a slightly different, but similar story…. One said they only get allocated one pump kit per 7 days, another said one kit every 14 days, and both said if that stays the same, it would be about a year until they can get mine in and taken care of…. Sheesh! That’s all pretty frustrating to hear, particularly because my pump exhibits the strange on-off rhythmic ticking sound that I’ve seen other cp4’s do. Next to a friends identical truck, his doesn’t do that. Anyhow, every dealer in the area is telling me 4-5-10-12 months. Bummer! I’m wondering if I should broaden my area a little bit and maybe find a shop with less backlog perhaps.

Yep, same story I had,.. keep calling around and look from smaller dear ships (local) I tried Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro NC, and they were all waiting listed for 4+ months

I had to buy a Durango for the Mrs and have some issues with it then they did my recall right away.

Had DEF issues and they got me in right away too.

I sent the service manager a email (after getting the run around for 3+ months) and mentioned that I tow a 18K trailer and that my fear is the pump going out and loosing brakes, steering etc in the mountains where I RV a lot and having to free wheel the whole truck/trailer downhill etc. Some how or another, mine was in the shop 2 weeks later getting the pump changed. Don't know if the email helped or it was just timing luck etc. Prior to that, I was told 3-6 months.
