Service Engine Soon Message

A couple of weeks ago I filled my '95 Continental with fuel. Upon leaving the station I had to accellerate pretty hard to get into the traffic flow and my "Service Engine Soon" message lit up and stays on. I assume the culprit is the oxygen sensor. The car still runs OK (57,000 miles), so I'd prefer to stay out of the shop with it. How do I get the message cleared? Suggestions appreciated (I'm handy with minor repairs on both the car and the Cummins, but don't delve into things that require great technical abilities).

did you tighten the gas cap well? some OBDII car's [and maybe some OBDI] measure gas tank vacuum to prevent the loss of VOC's [volitile organic compounds] into the atmosphere. if the cap is loose, it can set a SES light. try tightened it up. & driving around for a bit



you should be able to clear the code by disconnecting the battery for 30 min or so

On most vehicles I've dealt with that have a service soon light it isn't because there is a problem but rather a major service that is due based on the odometer.

Most times it's the timing belt that needs replacing.

I'd give the Ford dealer a call and see what's up.
