What is the differance between a Service Manuel and a Diagnostic Manuel? What does information does each one tell you.

I went to the Tech Authority web page and had the option of purchase either one.

Do you prefer the cd or hardback version.

Thanks, Bryan

I bought both Service Manuals (paper and electronic) for my 2001 which is now sold. It is far easier to store and move the electronic copy. The paper copy is nicer for when you have greasy fingers. For my new truck, I am going electronic only. I can always print key pages when I am working on something not near the computer.

I have both for my '97 (paperback). Alot of the stuff that is in the Diagnostic book is in the Service manual so you probably won't need it. The Service manual has a big section on the electrical stuff. If you have a 3rd gen truck, it would probably be the same way.

Since it isn't handy for me to print things off, I went the book route.

I have the complete set of all books for the 03. The service manual, volume 1, is everything to do with the truck... from replacing the air filter to honing the cylinders. Volume 2 is complete wiring diagrams, including all connectors and splices.

Then there's the Powertrain Diagnostics Manual, which provides complete ECM and PCM diagnostic trouble code information, and the procedures required to diagnose them and repair them.

The other manuals (chassis, body, transmission) are really just supplements to the service manual Vol. 1.
