randyn;

I find that when I post a reply to a thread, I get email notices when other folks post.

All interested folks should post a reply to this thread and they will be notified when it gets new posts.

And now I will get more email...

Maybe I will get a set of lock outs too.

If price is a factor, you won't be buying these most likely. Probably at least $1,500 give or take based on similar products from the same company.

I bought a 4WD because I thought that I might need it in the future if I ever relocated to snow country, but don't really use it at all right now.

Question is: can I temporarily remove the front axle shafts in an effort to increase fuel economy and reinstall them in the future when I need the 4WD? I'm guessing there may be a problem with gear lube leaking out with the shafts removed. I suppose I could pull the drive shaft too, and then seal the axle tubes and drain the fluid, but that seems like more work than I want to do.

Ken, that's not a bad idea but I'm guessing that the axle shaft acts as the spindle as well. You may have to seperate the U-joint at the stearing nuckle to achieve said goal. Even more work than simply pulling shafts and plugging holes. If you don't use four wheel drive at all it might be worth pulling the front drive shaft, then again, maybe not. How's that for commitment to an idea.

What's all the HUB BUB?

Boy,

A set of these hubs, the new mileage enhancing re-flash, and some of Don M's injectors... ... ... ... ... ..... I should get 50 MPG!!!!!

I'm in!

Oo. Oo. Oo.

Ditto! I've noticed that I can't find Warns, Superwinches, etc. for our trucks. I'm glad someone realizes a need. Thanks for carrying the ball.

Update!

Dynatrac is having to resolve u-joint problem. I talked to our guy that took his truck in, and we are waiting for Dynatrac to call him back to take his truck back in. I'm guessing they have to match up the AAM axle splines/flange to what they are using on the stub shafts (probably same as Super Duty). Actually this is good news to me, this doesn't sound like a very big problem. I will call Dynatrac tomorrow & see what progress they have made.

price vs. savings

I'm a lil on the fence with this one. it will be hard to make up that price with fuel mileage savings.

as for the wear and tear, as long as your transfer is in 2 wh. all the front drivetrain is just turning with no load . at least with everything turning all the components will be getting lubed. I do like the 2nd gen axle disconnect better.

I have always been pro lockout , but my 2nd gen truck never needed front axle u-joints. the truck before that was a Ford so, this isn't apples to apples but that truck had lockouts and I replaced the front axle u- joints twice in the relitive same total mileage

I only use my 4wh drive in the winter months here in upstate NY (lots of rd salt) and the front axles stay dormant all spring ,summer ,and fall with the salt eating away at them. If I would have turned in those hubs once a wk in the dormant peroid every yr , maybe it would have been better.

This is my peace of mind when ever i think about all those gears turning for nothing but less fuel mileage.

The replacement of those axle u-joints was $300 + each time =

$ 600 will buy alot of fuel

If that kit was somewhere around $800 I would buy just for the 2 wh drive low feature. which isn't possible with the 3rd gen front end. when your backing a 20 - 30 " trailer into a garage reverse is allways to fast.
