I posted this in the General diesel topics about Ford 1999 and up having problems with there front hub design, and bearings going out due to bad design for the DRW set up, to much load, not enough bearing surface. With no help FROM FORD. The article is in the August 05 issue of Trailer Life and they reference the Dynatrac design up grade, also mention that a kit is available for the Dodge, 2000 up. Noticed it to be a little pricey, but the group buy looks good.

My first Diesel was a 1st Gen 4X4. It had lock outs. It also had a bad steering trait, finally after much money and time it was found to be the 4X4 knuckles. They were not worn but they were bound up and tight . They were binding and releasing causing the steering resistance to change, you could feel it,making the truck wander . Very expensive to fix. I was wondering ,having the knuckles always moving, like the newer trucks, would keep them from becoming bound up?

Update:

Please note that Steve at Dynatrac requested that I start a list which is contingent on the final discount price and shipping info. To put anyone on the list I need your name and a phone number. Almost everyone has done this so far. I'm mostly posting this to get it to the top of the forum list. For those that have asked I'll check on a 2nd generation kit. I don't have any info on those. Steve's number at Dynatrac is 714-596-4461.

Update!

This is really cool! I just talked to Robert at Dynatrac (Steve was on the phone). We are now going to be able to do this group buy on the hubs for all generations!!!!! '94 up! Also, check out the August issue of Trailer Life for detailed write up w/ pictures of these kits. Robert told me the reason for the Dodge kits was our TDR group buy! That's kinda cool.

After looking at that pic I just posted again I would imagine that the hub plate that slips over the lug studs would push the wheel out more than stock.

Maybe not much but it will increase the scrub radius, and these 3rd gens are already pretty tough to keep the rubber under the fender with aftermarket wheels.

Not to discourage the idea cuz I do like it, just thinking. .

Good point... ... how much, if any, will this push the wheel out? I'm already looking at 4. 5" backspacing on the wheels I'm looking at.

Ouch. .combined with added wheel width they will be way out there. Might want to consider 5" BS wheels at minimum.

I realize many on this thread would like to have a lock out type hubs instead of the existing always connected front axles. Including myself, the only real benifit I see would be a operating in low range 2 wheel drive.

Question:

What problems are caused by operating a STOCK Dodge in low range won't the front front tires just scuff a bit. Now I am just talking about backing up or going forward 20' to 30' just to move a heavy load in tight quarters instead of slipping the clutch

Thanks Bill

With the manual hubs disengauged and the t case in low range the front tires will just spin free. . The front drive line and axleshafts will still turn... But you will not get any scuffing our bucking from the front because its not pulling our pushing untill you lock the hubs in. .

Dan, Thats what I mean if one just gets a little tire scuffing it would take an awful lot of scuffing to equal the 1700 plus cost for the hubs.

Can anyone give me a reason to get the hubs ? I really would like to be able to justify the cost some how.

Slightly better fuel economy is possible, 2wd low range is able to be used, AND $50 give or take to replace bearings in the kit versus $400 Ea for the unit bearings we have now.

can someone throw me the group buy price via PM? I aint going to say yes to anything until I get a price...

Sounds good by the way, but I am not going to buy anything until my hubs wear out, but that probably wont be to far away.
