I think I finally after 2yrs have my 1stgen Mortohome running close to stock. Blocked fuel vent, and dead electric transfer pump were major problems that only recently surfaced with the help of TDR frst gen members. I have done the basic things, air , fuel. I know I have to improve exhaust flow, and turbo to intake flow etc. (maybe the Jleonard cardboard tube... ).

Right now I'm at the turbo change point (stock H1C now) and need advice. My rig is fully loaded all the time. (12,000lbs) Low end is not too bad but I need additional top end to avoid being a road hazzard and not run egt up trying to keep up on minor hills. On the Level, I can run 62mph at 1000degrees post turbo,15lbs. Start to climb and boost drops heat climbs. Shift down(Allison Auto) boost climbs but so will heat.

Maybe thats the best I can get, but I have been reading here about turbo setups that can help top end, and maybe lower EGTs. Compressor wheel change, housing change (smaller vs larger) . Been reading web sites HTT, BD etc. and would like to hear from folks on Turbo set ups that might fit my needs.

This engine only has 65,000 miles on it so I hope to have it for a while.

Thanks any and all opinions.

Help me now and I won't be that big slow RV blocking the road when your trying to get to work.

First off, with that low a mileage, you need to at the very least get your injectors checked out. Sitting will allow gum and varnish to build up and clog tips. Might get your pump cleaned up and resealed while you're at it. When you reinstall it, set your timing to the 1. 5-1. 6mm range. verify TDC with another method than the timing pin. And speaking of the timing pin, check your valve adjustment. Set them to . 009" and . 019" for the intake and exhaust, respectively.

Second, what size turbo is on there now? I'd assume with a 1990 engine, you are nonintercooled with a 50mm (baby) H1C. And you likely have a 18cm housing on the exhaust. Sounds like you need an intercooler to start with- bigger is better- and maybe a stock HX35 or a hybrid of some sort to increase ariflow and get a regular elbow setup coming off the turbo. If you go hybrid, get all the air you can.

With your load, I would not go smaller than a 14cm GATED housing, preferrably a 16cm non-wastegated. 4" exhaust will help immensely. Does your motorhome have a tach? what kind of RPMs are you maxing out at? What is your peak boost and EGT climbing a hill? I'd move that pyrometer into the manifold, but I dont want to restart that battle. Gets almost as heated as dino vs synthetic oil.

Hope this gets you down the road to severe confusion and BOMBing :D;)

When I went to the bigger compressor wheel and the 3 inch STEEL crossover tube/intake horn it made the truck run much better at highway speeds, which is 65 to 75 maybe 80 mph for me.

I already had a 16 cm exhaust housing and my comp wheel and housing are from a 94 WH1C which would be a 56 mm wheel (I believe) and a MWE slotted housing.

The next step up would be an HTT stage II. That or the stage III would be my recommendation.

BTW the offer still stands if you think that rig can make up and over the Catskills and Berkshires.

Daniel: My climbing temps are really unlimited, and I know thats a bad thing so I watch it. I dont have a tach, but it's on the list. Not sure how much I lose because of the Auto trans.

Right about the injectors never thought about that.

Thanks

Jay: Thanks for the recommendations. HTT lists a dealer in CONN. any knowledge on that?

I have read that a larger housing can help top end power and temps. Trying to avoid, "bolt on, bolt off.

I can go up any hill (I live on a big one just west of Albany) but pretty sloooowww.I pull over and let the school buses pass so the kids aren't late.

If I don't have momentum... ...

Any further thoughts appreciated.

Out toward Schenechtedy eh?

I e-mailed them ( Noble performance) once and asked some questions and they never replied. Therefore I won't recommend them.

I've dealt with HTT direct a couple of times and they are great people.

I thiink I just may have enough parts lying around to change your turbo from a baby H1C to a standard H1C. We could do that some saturday or sunday and you could see how it affects your vehicle. I really don't want to give up those parts forever, but we can work out a loan program.

Jay, If I look for an hx35 is there a particular year or configuration? One of the many things I don't know much about. Got to climb that learning curve.

Maybe I'll just have to visit with a big, "box o' turbo parts".

Thanks.

JG,

I got an HX-35 off EBay a couple years ago. It was right about $100, so I figured it would be just another lesson learned, if it turned out to be junk. The guy was parting out a wrecked 97 3500. It was supposed to have had 87k miles, and I was the only bidder.

I kept it in the garage for about another year and finally sent it to HTT, for a Stage III upgrade. I think that means I now have a 60mm intake wheel. Turnaround time was super quick. They packed it better than I sent it. I had built a cardboard tube around the exhaust wheel, as I didn't want to pay shipping for the weight of the housing.

Good luck! If you do go down to Jay's house, watch out for the drag races in the driveway!! :-laf :-laf

I'd recommend dealing direct with HTT. The local dealers will still ships parts out to them( Utah I think it is. )

A stage III is a nice upgrade. They have low flow 60mm and then the hi-flow 60mm compressor. Hi-flow wheel requires the backing plate to be cut out to accept the thicker wheel.

I can tell you this, the HTT Stage III alone isn't engough to cool my engine when I press down on the skinny peddle. I'll hit 1,500° with my empty truck very easily but then your not fueled quite like my 92 is. However your engine is under load all the time... ... ..... options options.

You have a big water tank on that rig, right? Eough for a couple of hours of water injection supply?

I guess he won't have any trouble finding my house.

Darn Tugger... you don't forget much do you?? LOL

Usually have 40gal unless somebody flushes a lot.

Sounds like you will always have at least 40 gallons of something to inject... . :-laf depending on who's behind you... . :-laf :-laf

Good point. Renewable fuel.

I'm going to try to get to the Nov 4th deal. When I saw SOS on the menu I knew it was a class group. I hope it is the Marine recipe, maybe I'll make some.

JG,

I'm very pleased with the upgrade. I had (I mean Greenleaf had) already replaced my stock injectors with PODs. He also put some Buckeye magic inside the pump, which I also got off EBay. I can also peg my pyro gauge, and still need to biggerize my exhaust.
