Thanks, TDR Staff

I really was looking for YOUR new car but...

Be totally honest!!! It won't kill me

There was a brief discussion/thread about SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) a while back.

A guy at work has been participating in what is known as "SETI @ home" for a few years... .

Basically - researchers that analyze radio telescope data that they collect require HUGE servers or basically 'render farms' to analyze their "ET broadcasts".

By signing up for this program - your computer at home or work that sits idle (while being connected to the internet) will spend it's "idle" CPU cycles re-analyzing their data... .

Here's the site to sign up and/or get more info:

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Soon as I'm done posting this - I'm signing up... . why not let my idle computer at work do something useful while I'm not here at work glaring at the monitor.

The network admin hasn't said anything about him participating... . the files are small and the risk of harm is very minimal. Besides, if you've got a network/infrastructure that weak... you've got bigger fish to fry.

since someone brought this up,

Why not do the cancer research at grid.org. ?

I've been crunching for over 6 years on 7 machines.

I wanted to start a TDR group.

Anyone interested?

You know... . right after I posted... . someone at work told me that there are a few groups like the SETI group that do the same shared reprocessing scenario... .

I'm all for medical research... . perhaps I'll setup multiple apps on the computer at work and let them eatup CPU cycles... .

I'm game - I've just loaded it on my laptop - might not do much processing, but hey, why not do something worth while than looking for Aliens.

However, is there a linux version of this? If so, where can we get it?
