I adj. my timing on my truck w/ MT-257 and adv. timing light and it is alot quicker then pulling the pump plunger out and using a dial indicator. I've been using my MT-257 for 15 yrs. and diesels that have exposed inj. lines and really had good luck with it. All you need is the TDC marked on the vibration dampner and it is like checking the timing on a gas engine. I purchased the tool to rotate the engine from Cummins for $30. The parts house wanted $53 and Matco wanted $42. Considerable savings from Cummins. __________________________________________________ 94 Ram 2500 mostly stock w/ 189,000 mi. 2 wd. / 5spd.

I agree it's faster but you didn't mention how much the timing light costs. Hard to justify the price unless you're doing it professionally.

That is true, being a self employed mechanic I do use mine alot more then most people, and these items have paid for themselves many times.

Do you have any idea how good the inductors you can buy for around $200 that convert a spark timing light to a diesel one are?

The only I'm familiar with is Snap-On MT-257. I bought mine when they first came out in the mid 80's. I think I payed appr. 150-160 for it. It has really gotten me out some jams when your timing diesel eng by just lining up timing marks.
