Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I Had to Do It!

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Bent drive shaft, thoughts?

I have auto trans, recently uped the horse power (60 to 80 more), new transmission fluid (non-synthetic). While pulling 4000lb (+or-) boat, and carring 3000lb camper, truck started shaking at about 50 mph when I pushed on pedal. It appeared to only shake when it was shifting to the passing gear. While driving the outside temp was in low 100's, don't have transmission temp gauge yet.

After I got home and dumped all the weight truck runs normal again. No problems with shifting.

I did notice fluid leaking from front of differential. I recently had that fluid changed also with synthetic fluid.

Any thoughts on best approach to find problem?

I had a 98 that did the same thing. It is the torque converter. The service manager at DC told me he had seen a lot of complaints on this and at that time did not have a fix. I called the main office for Customer Service and got a gentleman that I could not understand (foreigner), finally wrote a letter to Chrysler and quess what, they had never heard of such a thing. I later read in the TDR that this is common and to a more or lesser extent has been going on for years but is manifested more in the 98s due to the electronic transmission controls. I ended up trading it on a 5 spd manual after much frustration. . I hope you have better luck than I did attempting to get it fixed as it is a design flaw and Chrysler should fix the problem. . Good Luck!!!

If it is your TC sliping which it sounds like ( happened to me also) turning the line pressure up might help cure the problem. Check the DTT diesel trans. tech. website for instructions and keep clean ATF 3 in the trans. Good luck

I figured it was probably the TC. Does anyone know if a transmission lock-out unit would help solve the problem, or do I need a new TC, or will adding more pressure as Mallory suggested work?
