Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Shavings in my transmission pan???

Changed the filter and some fluid and did the bands today. While cleaning out the bottom of the pan I found the usual clutch material on the magnet (the black mushy stuff) but also found some fine copper colored dust and some not so fine copper filings down in the pan grooves. Is this normal or do I have something about to explode in my transmission? It only has 30K on it and seems to work ok.



Also... while checking out the other fluids I noticed my transfer case had auto transmission fluid in it instead of gear oil. Whats up with that??

can't answer the question about the transmission, but i'm sure someone will. the fluid in my transfer case is/was auto transmission fluid. i replaced with valvoline synthetic, and boy , does it shift better.

It is actually bronze and it is completely normal to see small quantities of small shavings. When you start seeing aluminum and bronze in large quantities get worried, till then happy motoring.

I agree with LS these metal shavings, dust, is normal wear on the auto trans. Parts break in and the filings, wear particles accumulate on the bottom of the trans pan. After all they are heavier than the trans fluid. I would worry if someone was neutral dropping the trans but, since this is not the case enjoy your Dodge.

Perfectly Normal are the bronze/copper shavings. I might be concerned about "Chunks". Bill K will answer questions for you, customer of his or not.

Just as everyone else said, the stuff you are seeing is "normal". In the case of your transfer case, it is supposed to use ATF unless it is a NP205, which I don't think it is.

Just a side note, rather than drop a pan full of fluid all over the driveway I used one of those hand-drill powered fluid pumps through the dipstick tube at a rate of about 1. 5 quarts per minute and only had maybe a pint of fluid left in the pan. Cant afford a mag-hytec and don't trust the aftermarket plugs so I thought it was a great alternative.

I have a 99 as well. The TC uses the same stuff you stick in the slush box.
