Cranked it the normal 1/2 revolution this am and the engine started but dies when I released the key. 2 more times that way, then it started and ran fine.

Same thing this afternoon. Started normally when I got home. Looked under the hood, no apparenty loose connections to the solenoid, KSB, Battery, no leaking of fuel anywhere I could see.

I'm hoping it's not the ignition switch again (almost feels like it) ... . that would pi$$ me off since it's only 3 years old.

Oh... "perhaps" a clue... . when I picked up the truck friday night at the airport parking the glow ring would not go off when the truck is running... . been like that since.

Anybody?????

Put a jumper on the pump solonoid. No problem staying running, follow back to the interruption. Still quits, got to be fuel. If it traces to the switch, there might be some (other) reason that the key switch is failing prematurely.

Good luck

James,

I checked the solenoid yesterday at lunchtime and it is getting power.

Assuming a fuel issue and not trusting the cheap junko lift pumps, I installed a new one last night...

Still same problem.

Today during lunch I will check to see if the KSB is getting power and jump that/troublshoot if necessary. When the truck finally starts, the idle is low and it does not have that sharp tell tale rap indicating advanced timing... . that's why I am suspecting the ksb or it's control.

Anyone have any other thoughts? (about this problem)

Assuming a fuel issue- - - - -

For quite some time my high miles 93 has exhibited similar balkiness on first start up. If I fill the tank completely and park with the front lower than the back (some hydraulic head on the fuel system), there is instant fire up with no skip or slow up take. Like you, I replaced the pump with little result. If I make the mistake of low fuel and front high, I often fear for the life of the starter before I get ignition, which is the original starter with about 600k miles. Clearly it is a fuel issue with me. Likely a minor problem with an oring or gasket in the pump. I have learned to live with it. This is one of those always sometimes never glitches that I don't even try to fix. Sometimes a problem but always brings me home, I never worry about it. Let me know if you run it to ground. I would be more inclined to replace something if I had a good idea that it would end the problem.

I only bring this back up to put closure to it.

I am back up and starting fine again.

Thursday as I was walking toward my truck to go home from work I saw a spot under the truck... crawled in for a closer look at it was a fuel stain from top of the tank.

The line comming from the tank had a rust hole in it... duh!

Now it's all plastic and new.

Scott... good call... thanks.

Jay did you use the synflex line?. . I converted mine over when I did the fuel tank, works awesome and available every where . . did 1/2" feed, and 3/8" return. .

Deo. . not sure what it was, but it's what my son keeps at his shop and uses for similar repairs.

BTW... the return was not connected to the tank... ????

man your mpg will be really good now ha. .

synflex is the plastic air and fuel lines used on big trucks and equipment its different diameters in and out then the oem auto plastic line and it is stronger able to take bends with out kinks etc. . Eaton Hydraulics > Synflex > Transportation Products

you basically cut it straight with a razor put the brass nut on, put the male adapter insert in and tighten. . easy to fix a break on the side of the road with a razor and a coupler... . . any how I know some one who plumbed a shop for compressed air with 3/4 or 1" synflex way easier and WAY cheaper then copper or black pipe. . just have to watch the flames ...

Later

Really? Where did it go? Or it fell off and that was the leak

Pete,

The leak was on the feed side where the line had rusted thru. Hence the mucho cranking to get it started.

The return line was seperated at the quick disconnect to the tank fitting... didn't appear to be leaking. Perhaps I am using all the fuel?

Normally I am pretty good about returning things however, even borrowed diesel fuel,, so I can't fuigure out what's up with that.

Anyone ever actually disconnect the return line on our trucks and see if fuel actually retrns to the tank??????

I know it does on P pumped engines but never checked a VE.
