I have a first gen motor in an 86 chevy truck. I'm finished with the conversion and I can't get it to stay running. The motor ran great when it was pulled from the truck but had been sitting for along time. I put a post in the conversions and got alot of good info but it still won't start without starter fluid. I've bled the lines all the way to the pump. I pulled the solenoid and broke the plunger loose, cleaned it and reinstalled the plunger and spring. I verified that the pump is getting power. I cracked the injectors and let them push out the air a couple of times. It will not stay running without starter fluid. The motor sounds good when it's running with the starter fluid. I don't know what else to do. Anything will help.

The starter fluid can wash down cylinder walls causing serious wear.



Are getting white smoke while the starter is being used? More than likely going to be a fuel line leaking or sucking air. How do you have your return line routed?

You should have a primer button or lever on the lift pump by using this you should be able to re-prime fuel system. If you have mechanical pump (or did you hook up an electric one).

On cracking injector lines at injectors and pushing air out I take it you saw fuel comming out. If you continually have to do this you are getting air into your system somewhere.

Be sure you are getting voltage to the pump when you have it in the start position. Use WD-40 instead of starting fluid

I read your post/thread in conversions. Taking 30 seconds for the fuel to reach the injectors is a long time. You either had a lot of air or fuel pump is going south, but I wonder if the overflow valve is working (if you have one)

As suggested in the conversion forum pull the injectors and have them tested,but it sounds like air getting into the system to me.

You verified the pump is getting power, did you verify the solenoid is working? I would have left the plunger out, installed the solenoid and tried to start it.

I pulled the solenoid plunger and turned the aftermarket fuel pump off letting the mechanical pump do the work and I got almost no fuel to the injectors. I think that I've concluded that the injector pump is bad. Anybody recomend a good place to get a first gen pump fast?
