Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Shell oil and Drain Bottle

I change my oil for the first time in my 2002 this weekend, Man I forgot how bad that Shell Rotella T stunk! After using amsoil for a couple years I got used to "no stink oil changes".



Also what are you guys doing about this drain bottle?



I took it off and looked inside it, its empty, but everything below it is soaking wet with oil. So much for the bottle working.



Has anybody extended there hose down like the 98's were? Maybe somebody can tell me the ID of that hose so I can get a fitting and some additional hose.

It should be 3/4" ID heater hose. BTW, I love the smell of

Rotella T.

I just lost the "Pill Bottle" a few days ago. I found a nice piece of chrome tubing from a broken dinnette chair that fit perfectly. I cut about a 7 inch piece. I welded on a mounting bracket and secured it to the stud that held the old bottle. I then extended the hose down below the front bumper.



I tend to over enginier everything, but I didn't like the idea of a long hose hanging lose and moving around.

Here's what I've done on two trucks now and it eliminates all the smell, and cheep to do.

I also notice its clean, mine was almost empty, but covered with oil on the outside

I ran the elbow to the driver's side, over the top of the frame and attached it to the front side of the wheel well liner in front of the tire. Used a little strap steel looped with a couple of 3/16's rivets and backup washers. The clamp around the bottle goes through the loop of strap steel behind the bottle. I drilled two extra holes on the bottle due to the hose clamp restricking airflow partially. Be sure not to restrick the breathability of this bottle.



Mine had an oil sheen on also I think just due to the pressurized venting that occurs at times. It's also been my experience that if you short trip your truck allot the amount of blowby seems heavier???



I've thought a cure to reduce the "blowing" out of the holes would be to get one or two of those metal pots and pan scrubbers you can buy at Walmart, and put them in the bottle. The oil won't bother the mesh metal and it would dispurse the discharge of oil.

I saw some post that you could put a paper towel around [the hose] inside the bottle. I just cleaned mine for the first time two days ago. gonna try this and see how it works. Quick and easy if it does work, try a hose extension if it doesn't work

Mine has a hose extension on inside the bottle. There is a 90 deg elbow connecting the hose accross the top of the frame and the hose down into the bottle. It goes down about an inch from the bottom. You will still get a little residue out of the vent holes.
