I have been out of the loop for a while but need some input on these products. I have been using T6 full syn since I went to the 2013 and newer RAM. I just saw yesterday the T5 shell 15-40 semi syn oil on the rack at wally world, and also the rotella oil filter.

I tow 25% of the time anymore and I figuring the T5 ($5 cheaper per gal) might be the way to go. I change the oil at 9k, per previous oil lab rec's from tests on the T6.

Any input on the rotella filter, good bad ugly. Its $6.95 at Wally world.

TIA.

"Any input on the rotella filter, good bad ugly. Its $6.95 at Wally world."

NO NO NO!!!

Buy the Mopar sitting next to it. If you use a sub par filter and have an oil related warranty claim they WILL deny you.

wow. i guess i'm in trouble. i have 70K on rotella filters and travellers 15/40 my engine still running good. I switched my 5.9 over to this set up as it's not driven much anymore. the 6.7 still uses the DBL7349. until i run out of them that is.

OP, get what ever oil you want. and what ever filter you want. change them at a reasonable time. your engine will never know the difference. if they meet the spec, it'll be fine.

I would pass on that filter. On another forum i have commented about the shell t6. A while ago there were discussions about pre filling the filters. The danger was plastic or foil getting into the filter. So i started using paint strainers every time i change the oil. I use them to fill the filter from a full jug. No problem. Then i got a funnel with a screen and put the oil through the paint strainer. I have been pulling out blue flakes from the jug manufacture process. The flakes are on the bottom i think. Other manufacturers may have the same issue. I was told they blow the jugs out before filling them. That in my mind creates static so may keep some flakes in the jugs. Is anyone else finding the same issue? I continue to use fleetguard stratapore filters and the t6.

Attending MayMadness and listening to the Factory reps they were VERY clear Chrysler is NOT going to pay a claim if they don't have to. Why take a chance over $7 per oil change???

I really doubt the filter mentioned has the Stratapore media.

Just read some other post where they figured it to be a Purolater filter. Those have a a bad rep too....

(1) shell rotella oil filter for sale ! RTO-47 $5.oo lol

At my local Walmart the oil filters get stolen. Open the box before you buy. Out here the fram filters get put into the bosch and more expensive boxes all the time. Then the thief gets a better filter at a crap filter price.

What is wrong in using the Fleetguard StrataPore filter ($13.95) or the lower cost version of a Fleetguard standard oil filter ($9.95)?

People will spend anywhere from $50,000 to $70,000 on a new truck, but won't spend $13.95 for an oil filter! This I can not understand one bit it just blows my mind!

BTW, Geno's garage sells them and will ship them to your house. I buy 6 at a time to spread the shipping cost over the 6 StrataPore filters.

I use the Stratapore filter per John Martin's review in the magazine a while ago. Remember that Mopar requires changing the oil and filter every 15,000 miles or six months whichever comes first.

I have used Fleetguard exclusively since 1998 when i bought my first Cummins Dodge ram. Since the day I have owned 2013's and up, I have used Rotella T-6 as it cost the same as regular 15-40 rotella when changed at the higher intervals.

I was only inquiring about the status of the filters as I had never seen them before at Wally world. You never know, it could have been made by fleetguard for Shell...I have since via the internet learned its most likely a Purolater made filter and thus will not go on my cummins.

I do buy from Geno's when they are competitive in price. I usually buy the 2 fuel filters and oil filters/air filter at the same time and save $20-40 shopping else where. However, I always give Geno the first try over all others.

Per O'Reilly's web site, the Mopar MO285 filter only has a 30 day warranty but out of all the filters they sell (12) the Mopar is the only one with an anti-drainback valve, whatever that does. Most of the filters they sell are good for 90 days, 1 year or even 2 years for the Motorcraft. I guess Mopar must warranty the filter for at least the 6 month change requirement.

correction to Rotella number

Did anyone else receive an email from MOPAR today recommending the Shell Rotella T5/T6 oil? What gives? Doesn't Cummins still recommend Valvoline oil? I thought all new 6.7L engines were shipped with Valvoline synthetic in the crankcase.

As long as it meets the Cummins CES 20081 spec.....you'll be fine.

Been getting those emails once or twice a week for a few months.

That's just someone trying to sell you oil changes.

I just delete them. It's not a mopar recommendation

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade)
In ambient temperatures above 0°F (-18°C), we recommend
you use SAE 15W-40 engine oil such as MOPAR®,
Shell Rotella® and Shell Rimula® that meets Chrysler
Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 engine oil
category is required. Products meeting Cummins® CES

Failure to use SAE 5W-40 synthetic engine oil in

My mistake. That's not in the 2013 diesel supplement on pg 94-96 where they talk about the Chrysler MS 10902, the Cummins CES 20081, and the API CJ-4. There is also a new oil rating being released next month for diesels that will start showing up in owners manuals. I believe it is API CK-4.

It appears Cummins recommends the Valvoline (and has for 25 + years), Mopar recommends the Shell Rotella or Rimula if you have a 2014+.

I've got some Red Line 15W-40 in the shed for the spring/summer.

Hi Patrick,

Yes, we stand behind the quality of our filters, below is the filter warranty. We also have a filter hot line if you have questions about a filter application, 800-526-4250.

In performance testing, it does as well as the non-synthetic media Fleetguard filter that meets the engine requirements.

Thanks for taking an interest in our products!

Subject: Shell Brand Oil filters liability etc ?

I have a question for you.I have owned Cummins powered Dodge and RAM vehicles for almost 20 years. I have participated in the Turbo diesel register.com web site which is exclusively Cummins powered Pick up trucks.

My question to you is, everybody on this web board says not to use the "Shell Rotella" oil filter as it is made by Purolater and the paper media can give out and plug oil injection points in the engine, thus blowing the engine.

I know some years ago FRAM had that problem and bought engines for some people.

Will Shell stand behind the oil Filters if the paper media gives out or will the buyer be stuck with the repair bill?

What if anything can you send me via e-mail that I can post on the web site to lessen people fears about using a Purolater made filter on their Cummins engine? Is it made to the same specs as Fleetguard etc ?

Thank you.
