I took my 94 in for hard starting(you have to push the prime pump to make it start then everything is ok. After $550 in diagonsis fees they say it needs a new injection pump. Why does it run ok after pushing the prime on the transfer pump but the problem is as serious as an injection Pump?

GET IT OUT OF THERE! It sounds like it just needs the rubber Feed/Return lines. It could also be just the Fuel heater gasket. Do a search on Hard starting. There are PLENTY of things that can cause the issue you are having. That shop wouldn't be touching my LAWN MOWER after that diagnosis!

Gotta agree w/ Joe G. It might need a new injection pump but wouldn't you start w/ the cheapest part first and work your way up from there. I would get your truck and put-put-put away.

P. S. Where are you located at?

I agree with the others.

Where are you located? We might be able to point you in the direction of a good and intellignet shop.

Thanks for the answer, Im in Seattle and its at Cummins Northwest. They say they have gone thru their diagnosis tree and are down to the Pump. I have had the transfer pump replaced in Yakima 2 weeks ago, because it was cutting out on a hill pulling a trailor. When I got back I pulled the tank to check the screen - OK - but discovered when bleed the system that the water fuel separator push handle leaked when the bleed nut was open. So here I am I spent 550 already for them to the checks in the manuel but I wonder If the return fuel check valve in the transfer pump could be bad

Listen to these guys, ;) Get your truck out of there. Your taking air in some where. Replace all your rubber fuel lines, and don't forget the hard one up under the injection pump. Thats where mine was sucking air at when I had a 95CTD

How long since the return line was replaced (if ever)? That's a good place to start. I had mine replaced by the Dodge dealer (prior to me joining the TDR) and it was under $150! I guess they used upgraded hoses because that was over 6 years ago. Be sure to use USCG rated marine hose if you do it yourself of get Larry B's kit.

Try The Power Shop in Enumclaw or Dynomite Diesel in Monroe. They've both treated me well in the past and are very familiar with our trucks. Or the items mentioned above such as fuel lines, heater etc are all relatively easy do it yourselfer tasks, especially with the directions and assistance you can find on the TDR.

Good Luck,

Mike

Thank you I checked back on my post and found your suggestion. I accually already took it to dyno-mite diesel and they think it is the check valve on the return line. I'll know tomorrow. Scott

What the heck kind of shop charges 550 for a diagonsis? Who are these Bozos?

I'm surprised that a Cummins shop would treat you that way. For $2K, I'll come up there, tow your rig to your house, and work on the primary side of the fuel system! :D
