I have a 96 2500 4x4 auto with 199,000 miles. It will not shift from 2nd to 3rd on it's first shift of the day without letting off and on the accelerator a couple of times ,once it shifts OD and TC lockup works fine. All shifts the rest of the day work great even if it sets for several hours . Only have the problem after it sets overnight. Any ideas what this could be ? Thanks in advance Ron.

Sounds like weak pressure in the line. Not giving it enough pressure to shift. Might be as simple as getting your bands adjusted. But i am deffinetly no transmission specialist, especially with autos.

I have exactly the same symptoms you are experiencing. I checked my transmission pressures and the governor pressure was way off, increasing to almost twice what it should be by the time I hit 50 mph. I 'm thinking the governor valve is possibly sticking or the seals are leaking or a combination of both. I checked my bands which were adjusted correctly. My line pressure was fairly high(85psi)and the front servo pressure took a while to build before getting to 40 psi and then jumping to 85 when it shifts onto 3rd. Hopefully I'll be tearing it apart soon. I'll let you know what I find when I do.

Ron,

It sounds like a seal defect in the front clutch to me. More than likely the seals have taken set and hardened over time/miles. A repair like this would require removal and disassembly of the trans.

I you have the $$$ available, it sure would be a good time to build a performance trans.

Could be draining part of the valve body overnite, and the lag is the filling of that solenoid shuttle...

Have you tried running in neutral while warming up first thing? Maybe even cycle thru the manual gears, that could help. .

If your transmission build has 199k on it, its definetly time to start saving for a rebuild, preferrably performance. .

good luck
