Has anyone had their shifter cable pop of the trans shifter linkage? Yesterday was doing a brake fluid flush and after doing the ABS purge, shifter arm dropped with no resistance and was staying in park. The things that ran through my head were endless! Upon regaining my thoughts, started down the path of what could have gone wrong. Looking through repair manual again, went under truck and found cable popped off of the linkage on my 68RFE trans. Will keep an eye on this for any future problems. About 150K on truck. Just wanted to put this out there for others to maybe check while doing their regular maintenance procedures. Is on my to check list now.

Just had that exact thing happen, but on my 4x4 shift lever. 167k miles. It's linkage on the 4x4 (not cable). Got underneath to examine. There it was laying there and the rubber grommet gone from the shift lever bracket. Found a Dorman grommet at the local Auto parts store. Installed it and pushed linkage rod back in. Just like new again.

Transfer case linkage grommet came off when in NC (4 states away from home) in Dec. I had to crawl under the truck and put it in 2wd to drive home. I replaced the grommet with a $5 replacement.

Found replacement bushing for shifter, Dorman #14104. Maybe we need to start a thread with part#'s used in repairs or mods to help others not have to search over H#lls Half acre!
The transfer bushing on my '14 is Dorman #14078 for shift on the fly.
