Has anyone seen aftermarket shifter knobs? It would be nice to find a replacement made from aluminum (or better yet, stainless) with the Cummins "C" engraved on the top. What better way to hold the Cummins power in the palm of your hand while driving!

Wouldn't that be kind of cold to grab onto first thing on a winter morning?

I have Hurst T-Handles on my shifter and transfer case. They are available with four metric adaptors. Find the adaptor that fits the shifter and screw it into the handle. Then use the matching size jam nut. Winter is not much of a problem here. It gets real hot in the summer though.

Was it DocT that has Bambi's jew case on shrunk around the shifter? Seems that would cooler in the Summer and warmer in Winter.

Go to Auto Accessory and search for shift knob and you will get a few carbon fiber and metal.

The shifter knob on my dads 2001 has moved about 90 degrees clockwise to where if you look at the writing the two is sideways on the upper left. Anyone else had this problem? I haven't really took the time to see if it will go back to normal but it has been like this for about 2 weeks now and we've had the truck for a month total. Not a big deal and the only time I do notice it is when I look where reverse is on it after driving my 5 speed.

Kyle,

It's probably just the insert with the shift pattern that has moved rather than the knob. Try pressing on the insert with the palm of your hand and turning the insert in the appropriate direction.

Just rotate it back into position, but DON"T take the knob completely off, whatever you do! I got bored one day sitting in the cab waiting for someone, so I started fidlin' with things. Decided to see whether the Ram's knob was like the Toyota's knob and unscrewed the darn thing. Well, it is and it ain't. The knob unscrews and screws back on, but there is the blasted little nut like thing inside the knob that's suppose to stop the knob when it gets to a certain point (with numbers faced up). If that "nut" does not attach right, the shifter makes a HORRIBLE vibration sound when the engine is running. Took 3 days of trial and error to finally get the thing back on right, with no vibration noise.

So, anyhoo, if the knob has only rotated a little bit, just rotate it back.

No kiddin? Just pry off the gear shift pattern? I thought that thing was glued on the knob. If it starts making noise again, I'll try that. Who knows, if I keep screwing around with the knob, and break it, that will mean TIME TO GET A STAINLESS REPLACEMENT! Woo hoo!
Thanks for the info.

If you take the black shift pattern cap off the knob be careful, it is in there pretty good. I ended up scratching mine a little about 5 months ago and I notice it everytime I drive.

I always thought it would be a good idea to remove the center insert and replace it with a plain black one (if such a thing was available) to confuse a thief.

Kyle,
I have the 2001 with the 6 speed, I haven't had that happen yet (knock on wood)
Try to turn it back--with caution , might get loose. Iv'e had mine for a month too so no more experience than you

Mine did this also and it is almost exactly 90 degrees turned. Then knob is not loose and My buddy commented that maybe the knob hadn't turned just the emblem on top on one hot day the glue had loosened up and reset later. Why would both ours be turned 90 degrees though?? That is weird
John

Andy, if you are looking for something to replace the shift pattern cap, a bottle cap from your favorite cold beverage fits right in there nicely.

My knob (shift pattern) has also turned clockwise probably slightly more than 90 degrees. I don't know how long it has been this way. Just looked down one day and there it was. The knob is not loose. I really hadn't tried to fix it yet and I'm curious to see what you find out about this little mystery.

The shifter knob and shift pattern button are two seperate pieces. The shift pattern button has to be removed to gain access to the am nut that keeps the knob from coming loose. A little elbow greas and you can spin the button back around inside the knob.

My gear position knob insert or whatever you call it has been loose from day one. It seems to move slightly each time I shift. After about a week it does a full 360 and is correct again. I have thought about gluing or silliconing it in place but have been too lazy.

When the truck was new and still under warranty, I *****ed about it to the dealer but they "couldn't reproduce the problem" and refused to replace the shifter knob.

The shift patteren insert will move, just use your palm and work it back into place.

I had a rattle that would go away if I held the shifter, so I pulled the cap (and buggered it all up) to tighten the nut. It seemed tight, I could not turn the shifter, but a little crank of a wrench and the noise was gone. Now I just got a buggered up shifter knob.
