The shifter nob on my 04 1/2 6 speed is twisted so that the gear pattern schematic is sideways and it drives me bonkers. I am about to take a pipe wrench to the mother. What holds the nob on? Locktite or maybe pressed on ?? How can I turn that thing straight with out destroying it ?

Don't glue it is very important that you leave it alone... You need to count the rotations of the pattern to know when to change your oil. I changed mine every third rotation. :-laf:-laf

To fix the pattern warm the knob up with a hair dryer and carefully pry the shift pattern out of the knob. The shift pattern is just a "cap" for the knob. Under the cap is a nut that holds the knob tight, that is why you can't turn it by hand.

Take care when prying that center piece out as the knob and center seem to be susceptible to damage.

Mine finally quite rotating, but its stuck sideways... after 159k, I seem to somehow remember what the shift pattern is, and simply think of it as theft deterent...

I pried mine out and put a tiny piece of double sided tape behind it. That worked for me untill I just swapped the whole knob out with one of the Cummins Power ones from Geno's.

I'm at 81K and still have not got a full rotation.

I am waiting for the 3rd rotation to do an oil change. At least someone told me that was how it worked a couple years ago:-laf

No more rotating for me. First I tryed putting little notches or cuts in the inlay bottom edge. That just slowed the rotations down. I finally put a small dab of silicon on the inlay edge and that stopped it. Hasn't moved in the past 2 years since.

I did what "bcdiesel" did & it worked beautifully! There was a lot of discussion about this problem a few years ago. Haven't heard much recently.

I popped the disc, with the shift pattern, out & made many slices, with a very sharp razor type knife, in the ridge of the disc that holds it in the knob. These slices create edges like what tread is to a tire. The "tread" holds the disc in place. I added one very tiny drop of silicone to the ridge just as an added measure to insure against rotation of the disc. It's still fairly easy to remove but, mine did not move after the "fix".

I just did what Buffalo did with a new cap since I destroyed my old one getting it out. The knob is very flexible when warm so use the hair dryer and you can spread the hole with a small screwdriver. I didn't know that until I destroyed the original cap. I also used a drop of super glue on the new one.
