How do I remove the shifter from the manual transmission? (NV4500) the book shows a special tool. Is this really required, and if so where do I get one?

It's really pretty easy. I do mine with a large screw driver. The top piece is spring loaded upward. Just push it down with the screw driver and rotate counterclockwise from the top and it will pop right out. I do it from the passenger side. Put the screw driver on the passenger side of the top piece and push down and toward the front of the vehicle. The top piece has to go down about 1/2 inch before it will rotate forward. There is a pin that fits in a L shaped slot and all you are doing is moving the top piece through the L shape.

I hope this helps.

If you are just trying to remove the shift lever, it's just pressed onto the stub shaft on the top of the trans.

I used a pair of wrenches and a pry bar between them to slide it up and off.

Do not under any circumstance pull the shifter apart like the book shows you to! That tool has to be special ordered and they almost never go back togeather again without having to buy a new rubber piece or bottom part of the shifter. The bottom of the shifter that goes into the transmission has a coller on it the you press down and rotate off the two ears that are 180 degrees apart then the shifter will just come out of the xmission. You have to undo your shifter boot and lift it up, then remove the cover. Go to a body shop and buy the double back tape, FUSOR #170 clear double sided tape, 7/8. It works great for putting the boot back down.
