Archived shifting problem

Archived Crazy loss of ALL electrical

just drove down to drop off trash and no problems until I went to shift into reverse, shifter stops at neutral. Drove home forward gears working fine. got under the truck unhooked the shifter and the problem is in the transmission. Any Ideas what happened?

New valve bodies have not been available for years so I am going to say more likely a reman unit,or repaired unit
 
Either way its still under warranty, is it possible it is something simple like a bolt fell out? I am thinking of pulling the pan and see whats up. Does anyone have an idea what I should be looking for? I also want to see if their in any shavings in the fluid because the shop is an hour drive and I don't want to fry it. Also truck is in my garage and will have to move it with my tractor to turn it around. Transmissions and axles are not my area of expertise, everything else I can handle. The upside to all this is at the end of May we are heading to Daytona for a wedding with our 11k 5th wheel and this would have really sucked then. : (

he 48REs for some reason have been suffering from premature VB wear where the detent ball and spring ride against the detent plate for the manual valve. The VB wears and lets the ball create a "pocket" that the ball moves to and makes it hard for the detent plate to push the ball back into the VB.

One fix is replace the upper VB casting. The other, one that I have been doing, is wire welding in the detent plate where the detent ball falls into the Park pocket.



And the replacement should be covered by your warranty if you have any left!

Pull the pan, no problems seen, fluid not fried and looks like new. Test drove the truck, no 2nd gear to be found, truck will wind all the way up unless you feather the gas and then it jumps to 3rd gear and from there shifts normally to 4th and lockup. This blows my mind, truck was fine last night, a short slow drive to the dump and it hits the fan.. So whats up with that, any ideas?

Broke the intermediate band or the strut\anchor fell out, strut and\or anchor is sitting on top of the VB jamming the linkage.
 
Ok, got it fixed and I wanted to post the repair so others would know if they search TDR. It was a broken "strut" above the valve body, part of it dropped into the shifter linkage in the valve body preventing the shifter going into Reverse or park. There is a heavy duty version installed now, saw it next to the old one, thicker metal. Drove the truck this week to Deland Fl and back pulling my 34' 5th wheel without missing a beat .
