Haven't heard of this one, what do those that know think ?

Hello, I have a 2006 RAM 2500 Cummins with automatic. For a while now, it has been hard to shift out of park and it had been getting worse. Then a couple of days ago, something acts like it broke. It now shifts easily, but the shifter is really loose and the indicator never goes to park. It appears to be shifting into park OK, but again, it indicates "R" and I have to shift it into neutral to start

Any ideas? Is there an issue with the shift cable? Did I break a mount somewhere? If it is the cable, is it difficult to replace?

Thank you

Two problem places, the brake interlock under the steering column, or, the detent ball or range senor ramp on the rooster comb on top of the VB. If you have been pulling hard on it you might have stretched the cable or bent the bracket on the trans that holds the shift cable. Pop the shift cable of the shift lever and see if the lever will go all the way back and show park. If it does the cable is out of adjustment, if it still doesn't show park the linkage on the VB is the problem.
