Shifting fork blues, thats right, I got the trans rebuilt and now have no second gear. Took the top off a trans that worked and installed on new trans and all is good. Now I need another one or try and fix what I got.

Does anyone rebuild these shifting forks or what can be done to fix/repair the forks/rods that don't operate correctly? Anybody? Does anyone sell these getrag tops or am I out of luck?

I have 2 of these trucks, restoring both to very good condition.

TIA

Zumbrota gear will sell you new shifter forks at a reasonable cost.

One suggestion - if you are re-using the same synchro assembly, check it carefully and make sure there is no aluminum fused to the inside of the shift fork slot. If it is there, it sticks like it was welded there and it will surely kill any replacement shift fork you install.

Not speaking for Mysteryman but I think the substance of his comments was that the forks that are available are not up to par. Poor quality machining and poor alloy. I have not heard a conclusion on the availability of complete tops.

And yes they can be repaired if you can get the parts but you might do better to find a good used cap assembly. Can you do pics? Just what do you need?

"check it carefully and make sure there is no aluminum fused to the inside of the shift fork slot. " As LDyck notes, this can be a problem. You can remove the fused metal with a dremel tool. Better to undercut the slot in a spot than to have a knot in there.

Well, I had to take the top off my spare, now core transmission, to get it to work. The old top just wouldnt do the shift into 2nd gear. It would act like it wanted to but would start the grinding affect. I tried moving the fork fore and aft but the only conclusion I could come up with is it must be bent.

Might have to see if I can find another "spare" so if anything would ever go wrong agin, I would at least have it.

Thanks for the help guys. It is appreciated... :)
