Shifting question - automatic

Thanks, TDR Staff

What will it take to go from 325/600 to 550/1200?

Surging with TST and towing. Anyone Else?

I need to ask you experts a question. Have a 2005 3500 diesel auto, 3. 73. When not towing, the truck accelerates normally. However, as it shifts, it feels as if it shifts 2 gears in rapid succession. In other words, it goes from 1st to 2nd, then to 3rd very very quickly. Not even a pause.

Is this normal for this truck? It has always happened since I bought it new. I do admit, I like to take off quickly from a stop :-laf .

I've never owned a diesel, so I am not real adept at knowing what is "normal".

Thanks guys (and gals).

Are you sure you are feeling it from 1st to 2nd? What you are describing sounds like the torque convertor locking. If you are on it hard it will shift from 3rd to 4th and then almost immediately lock the TC (which feels like another shift).

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the TC locks at all in 2nd (hence, my first question). It only locks in 3rd if you are in "Tow/Haul" mode. It locks in 4th with "Tow/Haul" on or off.

when it does the quick shift are you doing a nice easy acceleration? If yes I know what you are talking about.

Sometimes it shifts 1-2 a little rough then when 2-3 it alsmost feels like 2-3 then lock 3

Am I describing it right?

I'm going to say normal. Sounds like my trans. If I take off I get a 1-2 (quick) then theres some time in between, then 3rd to 4th And lock.

I'm not sure I know how the TC feels when it locks - still a novice.

I take off not too easy, but it shifts from 2-3, then almost immediately shifts from 3-4. Again, this is under no load. Just taking off from a stop.

Our trans under light acceleration (1,400RPM) will shift from 1st to 3rd, then back to 2nd what seems to be after the goveners make up their mind on pressures and speeds.

Other than that, when in tow haul at WOT the converter locking/unlocking during shifts drives my crazy.

Yep, mine does the 1st to 3rd then back to 2nd thing and it drives me nuts. I don't get it. I've seen a few post about this, why would a engineer design a transmission to work like this is beyond me.

My transmission is the same way. When getting on the freeway, under decent amount of throttle, my truck will pull great and they it quick shifts. Like everyone else has stated, it will shift from 2-3 or 3-4 very quickly and it seems like I lose all of my power. I hate it; I wish it would hold each gear longer before it shifts. Now here is my question, how can I fix it? Would a HP VB help? What?
