I recently had my flywheel resurfaced, and it looks like it needs a shim now, as every gear is just a bear to shift out of (I recently swapped my gear oil with some Redline MTL, so it's good). I literally have to shut the engine down to get her in reverse.

The Dodge house wants $738 for a new flywheel (of course  ), and I feel my existing flywheel still has another 50K left on it, so I've been trying to find a shim to install. I'm not having any luck so far. I even looked locally for an aftermarket flywhee, and no one seems to sell them either.

Anyone got a line on a shim for a NV4500?

As a pathetic attempt at a *quick fix* till the shim arrives, I tried to put a shim between the hydraulic slave cylinder arm and the throw-out bearing lever, to no avail. Why did this fail? Is there a stop in the bellhousing that will only allow the throw-out bearing to depress so far, making a shim or new flywheel the only fix for this problem?

Thanks for any help...

shim for a flywheel never heard of it sound to me like u have a problem some place else. maybe the disk is installed backwards or the slave cylinder is shot. or the throwout bearing is not on the forks right.

When the new clutch went in my truck I had the flywheel cut down a good bit. Got a shim from the napa that cut the flywheel I forget the cost but it was the same thickness as what they took out of the flywheel haven't had a lick of trouble with it that was about 3000 miles ago.

We do a lot of clutches and we've never offered a customer a shim... . most of them are stamped and cause more problems than their worth... the tolorence on a stamped part from one side to the other can be up to . 015" which would cause on heck of a shudder... . or chatter..... on engagement... .

We find a lot of problems with the master and slave having air in the system..... thus not allowing the clutch to release... . in some cases the customer sees an allen set screw on the slave and thinks this is a bleed port... . it actually holds parts together inside... and if the allen set screw is removed the parts come loose and it never works... .

Bleeding is the key... . and in some cases we've had to take the master and slave off the truck to bleed it out... .

Here's a trick... ... pull the cover on the master cylinder and push the slave together with your hand... if you see bubbles in the top of the master... you've got air and need to solve this... .

BTW. . not all clutches are the same... . did you purchase a good quality kit with the correct thckness of disc..... don't quote me... but I'm thinking the disc should be . 330" in thickness at the facing... some lower quality disc's won't have the correct disc thckness and your problems are just starting... .
