Hey JFitzgerald.
Here is an idea for your leaky steering box:
I had a leak just like yours earlier this year. I bought a new "Adjuster Plug Assembly" from Dodge p/n 4117655, list price $105. 00, $84. 00 with my friendly and helpful Fullerton Dodge parts department discount.
This part includes all new bearings and seals and is fully assembled ready to screw in.
After removing the steering coupling, you can use a drift or chisel to loosen the lock nut around the plug.
Using 90 degreee bend needle nose pliers unscrew the old plug-oil will come out.
Grease up new plug (per instructions) and splines of the input shaft with the supplied grease. If you get an extra outer O-ring I would remove the one on the plug and use the extra one.
Screw in new plug with needle nose pliers until firmly seated.
Mark plug and steering box casting with reference line.
Back off plug so line on it moves 1/2" away from the one on the casting.
Install lock nut with chisel or torque to 80 lbf-ft if you happen to have the special socket. Make sure plug stays in position during lock nut tightening.
Re-Install the coupling. I would recommend installing an aftermarket coupler without a roll pin. My box started to leak because I had to pound so hard on the roll pin to get it out.
Refill with clean power steering fluid for Chrysler products. Do not use ATF.
For less than $300. 00 you can stop the leak, get a new steering shaft from Borgeson or other and save a ton of labor.
