what are some of the best shocks to replace the stock shocks on my dads dodge ram 2003 2500? i was telling him to buy some bilsteins but, are there any other good brands out there that are just as good and run for the same price? hes not really looking for a lift just the shocks. so if you guys could please just list some info on some shock absorbers and where to find them that would be great.

thanks

Bilsteins would probably work the best, but I have heard good things about Edelbrocks on these trucks. The Pro Comp MX6 is also an excellent choice. I ran Rancho RS9000's on mine before it was lifted and they were a complete waste of money. Even on setting 1 they seemed to stiff, yet I had a lot of wheel hop, set them to 9 and it felt like I was running solid tires. When I first purchased my truck I installed set of Monroe Reflex's. They actually weren't bad and were noticeably better than stock for around $30 a piece.

Did a search for Bilsteins and found them for 250 and change for all four at Shock warehouse.com

Thats where Im going to get mine.

pro comp mx6 adjustables were great on my 04. 5. i now have bilsteins resivior shocks on my mega.

Any one want two rear mx-6 adj shocks from my old truck PM me. they have about 10K miles on them.

Can you compare the MX6 to the Bilstiens? I had the MX6's on my Excursion and they worked great. I also had Bilsteins on my 05 Dodge and loved them also.

Does anyone know if the MX6's are valved for our trucks, or are they just adjustable.

Thanks

Bilstein.

RMX Nitrogen from Les Swab. :) I was disappointed they didn't offer the silver Bilsteins, but, I actually think they feel better than the silver Bilsteins I had on my '03. They litterally doubled the ride quality, plus they are lifetime warrenty too. They have a brushed nickel finish, it's a little brighter than the Bilsteins. I actually would buy these over the Bilsteins.

I realize this is a question depending on how one drives, loads, ect, but how long can one expect stock shocks to last? I have almost 50,000 on my truck, no lift, but used for towing. I installed Firestone Ride Rights just to keep thing level. I have found that stock shocks don't last that long. I'm looking at the Bilsteins, too, but I'm open for suggestions. I'm not going to wait unit I see front tire ware, or the front end wanting to bounce all over before I replace them, but don't want to replace to early.

I'm open for questions, comments, and rude remarks... ... .....

I just got done installing my Bilstein 5100's that I got from Geno's. First the installation. The two rears and the passenger front took about 1. 5 hours and were fairly easy. The driver's side front took me almost 4 hours. Take the inner fenderwell out and battery tray out. The ABS is a bit of a pain to get the center mount to disengage from the battery tray. I used zip ties to support the ABS so it did not dangle from the Brake lines. You also have to disengage the fuse/relay box from the battery tray. Once all this stuff is out of the way, the shock change out is fairly easy. I did find that the Bilsteins did not come with instructions. I am not an idiot but I did not know how tight to make the top mount of the shock thus compressing the upper rubber mounts. I treated them like I would any other shock and tightened the top shock mount until the rubber mounts were equal in size (bulging in the middle) to the diameter of the steel washers. I have no unusual noises and I feel the ride is actually softer and smoother than stock. The factory shocks by the way were another story. First I was feeling a dribbling effect from the back over rough roads. I could pretty much compress and pull the rear shocks apart by hand with little effort. Buy the Bilsteins. You won't be disappointed!

I just got done installing four new Rancho RS5000's on my Ram. It only took an hour and a half for all four. I did not have to remove anything except the bolts. I was wondering why you had to remove all those items?

Can anyone tell me what a good test is to see if shocks need to be replaced besides driving. My 05 has 36k with a little road wander?

I just installed the Bilsteins from Geno's and they were so much better than stock it was amazing. I has 32k on my 05 and tow a 9k camper. I never knew my shocks were so bad until I switched... . Unfortunately, I don't know a test you can use, but I know the Bilsteins are a head and shoulders improvement over stock.

That's what I have on my truck now. Don't ask me why, but dually shocks are hard to come by.

I have the 5100's but i didnt get them from geno's so not sure if they have the same valving... do those of you with the geno's 5100's still get the bottoming on the front end during certain conditions?

If you read the Geno's blurb about their Bilstein shocks, the valving IS special. If you DARE to read some of the suspension threads, other shocks with custom valving are becoming available as well. I went with the Bilsteins on my '96 and was very happy with them.
