Shocks

I am near the 45,000 mile mark and contemplating new shocks. I do not often take my truck off road, but do haul a trailer in the 6,000 lb range. Does anyone have any thoughts on a shock that is not harsh riding but gives a solid ride. Secondly I have been told by more than one person that my truck is much louder than other trucks, I can not confirm or deny this as I am so hard of hearing that I can not tell, I was just wondering if this a prblem I should be attending too.

Why dont you try Bilstien shocks?. They are kind of expensive but you get a lifetime warranty and they ride great. I put them in all my vehicles. I never go offroad either.

If you tow, Rancho 9000's are a good choice because they are adjustable for different loads. There are 5 settings, 1 being very mild for unloaded soft cushy driving all the way to 5 which is very stiff and ideal for heavy loads. Cost is around the same as other premium shocks, depending if they are on sale or not from $55 to $70 per shock. Shop around for the best deal.

I've had Rancho 9000s for a couple years and am pleased. 90% of the time I leave them set pretty soft, but the adjustable feature has come in handy when I've had a load in the back [not often]. I bought them at Desert Rat Offroad in Albuquerque - can't remember the exact price [and too lazy too go find the invoice - hey it's a holiday] but I do recall that I compared prices and it was sure fair/better than most. The big PLUS was they did the install right on the spot at no extra cost over the price of the shocks. I also had them put on the Rancho Dual Steering Stabilizer setup [uses a pair of Rancho 5000s] which is very COOL and a noticeable improvement over the screen door closer weenie setup that came from the factory ['96]. also, IMO, anybody who goes the R 9000 route ought to seriously consider FORGETTING about the "In Cab Controller" setup... it's a waste. I was tempted at first but didn't get it. Since then I've read a fair number of negatives about it. Besides, I've found it a piece of cake to change shock settings thanks to the gigantic wheelwells on the Ram - takes about one minute to adjust all four.



In closing I have to tell you that I also agree with EMDDIESEL in that you sure couldn't go wrong with Bilstiens, either.



Are you confused enough now? I'm sure you'll have even more to ponder when other TDRers chime in with their favorites. Keep in mind, we're just trying to help.

Rancho 9000's. Adjustable for the load. The other half always knows when I have not adjusted them when I pull out of the drive when I hook up the 5th or have dropped it.

On the front I installed Rancho RSX.

Do the Bilsteins mount with the rod down on your truck? They do on my Cherokee. You know lower unsprung weight and all that.

I put the Edelbrock IAS Shocks on my truck about a month ago. I really like them. They give you a firm, not harsh ride.

I have the Rancho 9000's and very happy with them. I was driving west of Little Rock on the Interstate with my camper on and the highway was beating us to death. I pulled into a rest stop and reset the shocks to a lower setting and the ride smoothed out nicely. My wife quit spilling her coffe even.

I've got the Ranchos. You won't go wrong with them on your truck and the ability to adjust makes them the choice over other good shock brands, all else being equal.

I also put the Edelbrock shocks on mine, and love them over the stock ones that were shot... . They ride real nice, and level the truck out in turns dramatically more then stock. They supposedly know when you hit a bump and take it softly. I do wish they were a little more stiff at times.

I have not installed them in my truck yet, so i dont know if they mount Rod down. I think they do though.
