Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) shoehorn and 8.3 where a 5.9 was?

Has anyone tried to shoehorn an 8. 3L into a 94-02 dodge? Any suggestions? :-laf

I know there was one installed in a '82 or '83 F-350 w/ a '97 body. Front-end was beefed up to carry the weight. IIRC, it has a 9 or 13spd Road Ranger behind it. Sharp looking truck. Saw it again, on Ebay quite a while ago. IIRC, a TDR member owned and built it up.

What are the dimensions compared to each other? I would think that would be your 1st sanity check and then what is the weight difference?? It would be a neat setup, but I would think some serious strength issues would be in need of review and planning.

IMHO there is no way your going to shoehorn one into a 2nd gen. body, theres barely enough room for the 5. 9. One might have better luck shoehorning it into a a 1st gen. body as they have more room in the engine compartment.

You could always do some firewall modifications, take out the inner fenderwells, do a body lift, etc... If you're ambitious there are plenty of options.

If I can squeeze a 12 valve cummins into a Sumurai, you can fit an 8. 3 in one of these trucks. Just depends on how much of the original truck you need to have left over.

I'll do my best to get them. The Samurai that the 12 valver is in... belongs to a friend of mine that is a Marine and he is in the sand box, with the pictures we took. And the Sami is in storage. I'll try to get him to mail some of them to me. Or get the keys to the self storage place so I can take some new pics. I'll post them as soon as I get them.

if you wanted to do something crazy..... get a Qc longbed 4X4 and gut the whole thing. put the nose of that 8. 3 right between the were the front seats should be. cut a nice chunk out of the back of the cab for the rest of the 8. 3 now for some custom driveline work and a few other things... ... . well alot of other things... then for a camper shell and a set of stacks going through it! now add about 4k of weight to the front of the truck and go hook a sled!!!!!!

Sounds like a plan to me.

You could have the first mid mounted 8. 3 powered truck. Better weight transfer, only problem might be center of gravity.

I have a pair of 2. 5 ton Rockwells out on my warehouse. For a project like this, I may just donate them. I have a pair of 5 ton Rockwells too. All four are steering axles though. If you're going far enough to put an 8. 3 in a truck and all the other bells and whistles, you might as well have 4 wheel steering. Come to think of it, I have the transfer case that came ouf of the old deuce and a half. And a transmission shouldn't be hard to come by. There are plenty of Eaton Fullers at the semi junk yard down the street that look to be in decent shape.

Well if you were a bit closer id definitely be down to donate some time into making something like that come together. Yea 5 tons… even better! With 4 wheel steering! :--)



Any ideas to the power achievable with the extra 2. 4L ???? Oo.

Well, they do say there is no replacement for displacement. But for the lack of aftermarket products made for this engine (as far as I know) probably a lot of torque, not much HP... Unless someone were to develop an injector for it, and a HUGE pair of turbos and some timing/pump tweaks. I'd have to imagine some serious power could be made.

i dont think finding turbos would be a problem... but the injectors might be... i know i have a really small drill bit around here somwere. :--) hehe

These pictures are with the stock springs up front, obviously before the 12 valver went in. Those are 35x12. 5x15 TSLs to give an idea of size, pictures don't do it justice.
