Wiring question - HELP

I happened to be under the truck doing some things yesterday and noticed the dumba$$ installer who put my 7 pin plug in the bed has it jambed up hard against the fuel filler cavity on the other side. It seems the plug sticks out quite a bit on the backside of the bed wall and the wires are pinched against the plastic where the fuel door is. I figure its just a matter of vibrationa and time before the wires are broken. Probably would have happened while going down a steep grade. That would be the best time to lose the trailer brakes! Pissed me off- they had to have had a hard time getting that in. So now I have two choices- cover and patch the hole that's there and drill another and move it over- not happy with that- or find a new plug with a shrter depth. The one that's in there now is a standard Pollak. Enyone know of a shorter one? This things sticks out a good 2 inches or more!

Could you pull it out, remove the wires, and trim the back of the housing off some? Maybe with a hacksaw? I know it has the wire retainer in the back of it, but maybe with some heavy duty electrical tape and some electrical grease on the connections on the back side... ? If it is in your bed it is somewhat protected from weather and I think you could use wire ties to keep the strain off the wires goin into the connector.

Just a thought...

Could you put a spacer between the connector and the box to move it out a bit? Your idea of changing the plug is the best option, if you can find one.

Eric- I suppose I could do that- I no longer have the 7 pin harness in the rear, it was removed before I got the truck. I seem to remember though that the factory 7pin not being as long as this, I'll look in to that as well. Is the factory trailer package a Mopar part?

Yes- Ron I did :D !! Thanks again for your help in getting the instructions. I haven't had a chance to pull with it yet, been working a million hours still. I'm going to pull this weekend with it just to finish getting it set up. It was a bit tricky to get the correct 2 1/4" inch travel (picture wife stepping on me and brake at same time:rolleyes:  ) but we got it done in a couple hours. Took longer to unravel the rats nest of wiring that the moron installer did the first time on the Drawtite controller. That's actually what caused me to look under the truck and check the rest of it out:mad: .

Thanks again-

Kev
