Anybody had problems with the 6-speed shaft rotating after the BD short-shifter is installed? BD says it's not them because, once their unit is install, the unit can't move. Maybe my shaft is working loose some way.

I don't know about the shaft issue, I bought my truck with the SS installed. I'm having trouble being consitent with my shifts. I seem to mess up on the 4th to 5th shift. Also down shifting seems to be a crap shoot. Will going back to stock help? What would I have to do?

You must have bought it used 'cause I never heard of a new truck with a BD short shifter. That's an after-market purchase.

I'd say keep practicing shifting. You're not the only one who has trouble. No, going back to stock would not help, in my opinion, because the idea of the short-shifter is to shorten the "throw" 30 percent and make shifting easier.

Put the gear shift in neutral and see what gear is straight up and down without any side pressure. (You'll find it's 3rd and 4th. ) Then put side pressure to the left and that's 1st and 2nd (up and down). Side pressure to the right and that's 5th and 6th (up and down). Main thing is to take your time and don't rush the shift. You can't run up and down the gears in a truck like you can a GTO (now I'm dating myself). Listen to the big boys next time you stop beside one at a traffic light. You'll hear the engines revving as they shift the gears. All we gotta do is shift like they do.

Thanks for the help, yep I got it used. I used to speed shift my 2000 SD PS dually Ford, got second gear scratches:D . I'd like to get that good with this truck, it steers and handles so much better than the SD's :D :D

are you sure it is the shaft rotating? or is it just the shift pattern disc rotating? [mine has rotated from a 9-3 clock position to a 11-5 clock position in just over 1000 km]

Gee, I dunno. The knob on top says it's turned 90 degrees to the right from where it was. First time around I thought it might be the knob turning on top of the shaft, but that wasn't it.

Mine is on it's 6th or 7th rotation in 27K miles. Some guys put a dab of glue on the disks edge to keep it from rotating. If you do a search (not sure what key word) you will find more than one thread on the topic.

Thanks, I'll do that!

Rotating Shifter Disc

This problem was addressed in earlier threads. I followed their advice and, it worked. Take the disc out with a small screwdriver and then, with a knife, make small slices in the retention ring. This will give the disc "traction". Will stop it frombeing able to rotate. I, also, put a tiny drop of silicon on the ring. Did this months ago and it totally stopped the rotation. Hope this helps. Got it! Thanks! I should have checked the threads before asking.

The shift pattern insert moves in counter-clockwise direction and can to be repositioned from time to time. I use a small screwdriver to carefully pry up the cap, then just reposition it @ 12:00. This repair procedure will not likely have any effect on shifting performance, mileage or performance in the quarter-mile;) . I feel that looking at that pattern while driving could be harmful to your health.

when my truck was new it spun faster than my watch ha ha

removed it and put little glue on the disk and replaced no trouble since

My 2nd gen does it...

the disk spins on my second gen. If you have to look to know where the gears are, you got no business driving the truck. :-{}

Grew up driving standards, so I can say this.

FYI... note that the shift pattern of the transmission does not change as the disk rotates around in the top of the shifter. :--)

yea but a first class operation dosen' need it's parts looking bad going down the road because "it's not cool if your chrome don't shine"

Hoo, boy! I can tell you ain't got no wife driving yo truck! Besides, I look at it like this: if something as simple as a shift pattern disk gets catty wampus, it makes people wonder what else can go wrong. Whatever is on my truck is gonna work or I'll get rid of it.

Hey Dean, mine goes clockwise. You must be left handed. :D

Or maybe left-brained. I even had that problem in the army  . If you ever get directions from me, be sure to have me repeat them:eek: .

But don't the clocks all work the same? :)

Not necessarily, Jere. For example: I have noticed at the mall, my watch seems to stand still and my wife's watch seems to either stop or go backwards;) .
