2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission short vs long bed payload

I'm in a search for a 2500. I noticed while searching consumerguide.com, they listed the payload significantly lower on a short bed than a long bed.



I have been told that all diesels with five speeds have a Dana 80/70 rearend. Is this true in short beds and long beds? If so, how is the lower payload explained? Is it simply a factory mounted tire spec issue? Is it a spring rating issue? Is there something different about the rearend (wheel bearings)? Is it some combination of these. Or, was the site's info wrong?

Welcome to the TDR Chris.

I think all the 2500s are rated at 8800 lbs GVW, that means the lightest truck (std cab 2x4) will have the highest payload and the heaviest truck (QC 4x4 long bed) will have the lowest. I just looked at the specs shown on klenger's site http://www.klenger.net/dodge/2nd-gen-reference/towing-charts.html and in a QC 4x4 the short bed is rated higher than the long bed. All manual trans trucks have a Dana 80 hybrid (80 center with 70 hubs), the 2500s with an auto have the Dana 70, the springs, bearings and tires are all the same.

Also, a 6 speed will have about 200 lbs less payload than a 5 speed or auto because the NV5600 is 200 lbs heavier.

I almost fell over the first time I looked up the weight on the 5600. I think the NV site listed it at 360 lbs. If I remember correctly the 4500 is about 200. Both pretty heavy.



I was also curious about the gcvwr... 20,000 lbs.



I pulled up the newventuregear.com and couldn't find the transmission list, only transfer cases and transaxles. Looks like their site changed since I last saw it.
