I have the fuel tank out of the truck and would like to shorten it (the tank, not the truck) by about nine inches to allow installation of a USGear transmission. On a Quad-cab, short-bed, six-speed, the transfer case will interfere with the fuel tank if a USGear unit is installed.

A couple of years ago, I heard of someone in Texas who would shorten the tank by welding the plastic. I have found a Cincinnati guy who may be willing to try to weld the tank, but he says that fuel tanks are usually cross-linked plastic, which is not weldable.

Are our tanks cross-linked plastic?

Was the story about the guy in Texas who welded them true?

How do I get my tank shortened?

If all else fails, will Transfer Flow, or AeroTanks, or someone else build me a tank to fit?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know what you mean. I was under mine today putting a pusher pump on. It is definitely tight under a short bed. I have never heard of someone shortening a fuel tank. I guess anything is possible.

Imills,

I guess that I should probably have started by asking USGear. No, I haven't asked them about it yet, but I will. It's New Years Day, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

That thread you suggested was good reading, and reinforced my decision to go with USGear instead of Gear Vendors, but it doesn't address the how-to of shortening the fuel tank.

I'd hate to let this guy try to weld the plastic only to learn that it IS cross-linked and is not weldable. Then I'd probably be buying a new tank somewhere. That may be the final solution anyway, but I'd rather not ruin my tank to find out.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, I noticed they didn't mention much about the tank. I did a search to find this and a few other's. The other threads didn't say too much about it either.

Aero Tanks

Loren,

I have a friend who had an after-market Aero tank installed. He had to remove the tank and re-install his OEM tank in order to add the Gear Vendors unit. His truck was a long bed 3500 4x4.

He contacted Aero Tanks and they said they would modify his tank for him, so I would suspect they would make a tank that would solve your problem.

I have a Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement tank in my truck and love it! You might want to talk to the Transfer Flow folks, as well. They may have a solution for you. Really nice folks.

Good Luck & Happy New Year,

Frank
