Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Shotoff solenoid current

I was messing around with the shut off solenoid, and the dinky wire I was using got hot quick. So I hooked an amp guage up and it was almost 40 amps. Is this normal? The stock wires are pretty big, but that's still seems like a lot for something that has to be on all the time.

That's the pull on current. It's only there for start. After than it's held on by another coil that draws much less current.

So I guess that's what the 3rd wire does. I'll go experiment.
