Lets all click our heels three times and hope it goes away. We (the US) have no say in who hosts the Olympics. And if we do boycott the olympics(like we did during JCs rule)we only hurt our people who have trained for all those years.
Look at the big picture. The Chinese people only hear what there goverment wants them to hear. It will be next to impossible for them to ignore or censor the media of the world. This can only bring change. All change is not bad.
Whos to blame for the Tiamen square,our plane scare?The old guard,the old Communist leaders who have held there country in the dark ages for the last 50 years. Let me pose this question:If the Chinese flew a spy plane within 50 miles of our shore,would you promote confrontation?You bet you would!
Our goverment is as much to blame for the plane incident as they were. And you can wave the flag all you want and it doese'nt change the fact:It was and is a uneeded mission!If you continue to poke a sleeping Bear,sooner or later you will be swatted at!

Why?
I don't know that the bowels of China or any other culture would be a bad place. Not as bad as some areas in the US for that matter. We have all been brainwashed to a point that all Chinese,Iraqs,Irainians,Lybians,and so on are bad people. We look at the images of the news and our goverment. We tend to believe all we see and hear.
The US thought at one time that all Japanese,germans,and Italians were bad people. We have found that that isn't so. Communisum has failed,this is Chinas reason for their push for the olympics. Money!!!!Communisum is not bad,its the people that come into power that are bad. Any absolute power has a tendency to be corrupt.
If the Olympics brings a little bit of the outside world to China,it might just open some eyes of those there who believe the US,and the rest of the free world are evil. As far as the safety of the olympians,they will be safer there with the whole world watching.
The only difference between our propaganda machine and theirs is we have the right to believe and speak what we choose. And vote for who we believe in.

... . that it's the leaders who make Communism bad... . not the full-on communism, or socialism or democracy is the best way... I gotta think that a mixture of them all would be the ideal way to live... sadly, it wont happen any time in the next 500 years. I have a pal in the office who's Russian. It sure is interresting to hear his 'inside scoop' on what really goes on instead of our CNN propoganda. They are just simple, hard-working people. A high school education is manditory. They are not all Communists who burn Capitalist flags. He cant stand Gorbechev... says he tried to slam-dunk the country into democracy when it wasnt ready... that the Chinese are doing a better job of it... . for about 25-30 years now, they have been ever-so-slowly weening the people into capitalism. Personally, I agree that it'll be good to get media in there and show us the real scoop... . or, at least as real as 20/20 gets!

Maybe you should read up on it a little instead of losing yourself in The propaganda and the Mcartyism of the fiftys. It is no longer 1955!Communism in its pure form(without dictator)is not all that bad. Everyone is equal,everyone has healthcare,everyone is fed,and everyone has a say. I was raised with the idea of the Red menace ready to take over the world to. However those days are over.
I suppose you believe there are no problems with Capitalist ideals?Right now in America over 1/3 of the country are without any health insurance. Over 250,000 children go to bed hungry everynight. And our war against drugs and crime is going downhill fast!We are building prisons at a rate of one per month and still can't keep up with the courts!Most of the people in the prisons see an easy way to make money and take it. Not allot of jobs out there pay unskilled labor over minumun wage. Our large corp. are wanting the workers to work together as a team,but mention a Union and they panic!Our countrys labor laws are a joke(any corp with a little money and lawyers can turn into a peice of worthless paper). So please tell me where our collective

I remember Waco and Ruby Ridge more than I remember Tianamen Square. Lets face it China is a big part of this planet, we had better learn to live with and become friends with them. Don't for one minute think we can bully them, if it ever comes to war my moneys on them winning. We may have smart bombs, they have smarter pilots for their bombs.
In it's purest sense, if you don't take human nature into account, communism would work but it would be a far cry from Utopia. Everybody the same, the state making all the decisions (you ever read 1984?). Russia is an economic basket case because several generations of Russians have been ruined by communist theory.
It's no accident that the United States is the premier economic/military power in the world. We have the purest form of capitalism (of the major countries of the world) although we are currently headed in the wrong direction.
I'll take imperfect capitalism to perfect commumism any day!!

No, the USA system is not perfect, and yes anytime you have humans runng any aspect of a system (such as Ruby Ridge, etc) you WILL see abuses, people given the oportunity to mess up often will.
but, our system is the best in existance.

Communisim is a JOKE--it will never be more than a sham wich allows those in power to serve a dictators while pretending that all are equal,
As, I believe Orwell put it in 1894, all animals are equal, its just that pigs are more equal than others.
The day dream that all can be equal simply flies in the face of reality.
We should compete in the olympics now that the commitee has taken a backhand slap at the USA but giving it to a non-deserving nation,
but any US citizen who goes as a spectator should get a good kick in the butt.
Guess I'd better quit before I say how I feel about some of the really uninformed comments here.
