in ohio if you pull a trailer with a gvw over 10k you need a cdl. the scales in ohio read "any combination vehicle over 5k needs to cross scales. I have heard that they are really cracking down on "hot shotter" type vehicles. I have never had a problem. "knock on wood". but then again I dont do it very often.

The signs actually say "commercial vehicles over 5T GVWR" if I'm not mistaken. I'll be heading passed one this afternoon headed to my parents, I'll double check that.

Not sure what you could haul that is why I was looking into it :) Read over on hotshothauling about some people who just run a flatbed on a PU with no trailer. But... I will probably stick with the cars since it is what I know best and am already headed in that direction.

Removing the bed doesn't make it any shorter but now my truck is viewed as a Tractor in the eyes of the DOT instead of a Truck. I don't know the exact rules offhand but basically a 48 foot trailer and a pick up truck exceeds the "truck and trailer combination" length limit and Florida likes to enforce it, which is somewhere I plan on running.

What is the length reg in Fla. for a pick up and trailer? I may be headed that way next month with a load.

Sorry I can't find it exactly. There was a post on hotshothauling.com but I can't seem to find it. It was by atvfreak2002 (DHorton here - was fined for being overlength).

Haulin_in_Dixie from DTR says either 48 or 28 depending on how they feel. At that point I just took off the bed and said forget it since I was converting to the dually anyway, I would have had to go out of my way to get dually fenders...
