Does anybody out there have experience with the 12cm housing? My '93 is bone stock... It would be nice to have more boost, but I don't want to go the complete makeover route. I have an opportunity to get a used 12cm wastegated housing... would this be a wise choice if the only other mod is to adjust the pump for it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Scott!

Welcome aboard! You'll find these boys to be a great resource for keeping you truck purring down the road!

Scott, a few of us are in the midst of installing 12cm2 housings on our First Generation trucks. It looks like "Jsimpson" is going to be the first to complete the task. Check out his posting titled "12cm2 in the mail" from about a week ago. If it doesn't show up set your preference box to "show all" from "last 20 days". HVAC also posted a week or so ago, titled something like, "newbie, needs help" or something similar. He is also working on a friends First Generation 12cm2 install.

I will be a few weeks out before I get my 12cm2 on my truck in place of the 14cm2 that resides there now!

Thanks for the reply, Keeno. Have been a TDR member for 3 or 4 years, but just got my posting credentials! So, what do you expect to gain by going to the 12cm from the 14? Quicker throttle response? Anything else? What's the trade-off. . higher EGT's, fuel mileage, anything?
Thanks!

Hey Scott!

No worries on the reply! I had forgotten that "Thunderolls" had a 12cm2 installed until I reread the thread.

Hey Thunderolls!
Could you let us in on a few of your opinions on the First Gen 12cm2 Combo?
You know things like boost increase, driveability and any EGT differences!

Thanks Keeno!

Sorry, I been away for a few. I do indeed have the 12cm installed. Here are my findings: stock boost was 15-18. Now is 28-30 empty and 30-32 loaded (13,00lbs+truck). I just came back from Chicago with the truck and got 18mpg. It gets 17 just putting around town. Mileage did not change noticeably. Low end power was dramatically increased, infact I can get some burn on 35" tires (3. 54 gears)on take off, but don't recommend it. Obviously the pump was turned at the same time but had been some before 12cm. I am very happy with overall performance. HUGE low end power!! The truck goes in to get shift kit and trans tune monday because I dont like slopiness it now has. Hope that helps. Oh the cost to me for 12cm installed was $150 plus another $150 for pump timing, valve adj, and pump tweaking.

Oops, you also asked about EGT. It runs about 600-700 at highway speeds empty. Doesnt go up much loaded, maybe 100. Fully loaded, #13k + truck, under full throttle at 30-31 psi it can get to 950 or 1000 pretty quick. I don't know what those numbers would have been before upgrades. My EGT sensor is right in the exhaust manifold so the temps will be a bit higher than if your in the turbo down pipe. I have not yet climbed any extended inclines to observe EGT but if it were to get to 1200+ just let off a bit and let it cool some. Another comment... my ability to increase speed with a loaded trailer is incredible. I tow antique tractors to shows in Ohio and Indiana. A very pleasant feel when towing since upgrades. Going Amsoil this week for whatever thats worth. Not really sold yet, just going to try.

Thunderolls and KEENO--
Thanks so much for your help. I'm going to take the plunge (which you guys did long ago) and have the 12cm WG put on, along with a pump tweak. I guess the worst that can happen is I'll blow the motor, get stranded, and die of dehydration. I'll post with the results. #ad

Hey Scott!

Those Cummins are plenty tough! I doubt that you'll blow the engine but the Bosch VE44 is another story. As mentioned by our more technically minded Cummins brothers, the Bosch VE Injector pump cannot take substaintially more fueling without the need for better flowing injectors. Please check out the other postings and recommendations from "Power Wagon" & "Old School" before twisting the "Full Power" adjustment screw too much.

Keeno's suggestion: email Joe Donnelly with a request for a used 12cm2 housing and spend the money you saved for Jannetty Racing Enterprises (JRE) or Power Wagon Injectors before tweaking extensively on the pump.

Just my opinion! 12cm2 sitting on the workbench awaiting installation... ... . Keeno

Hey KEENO--
Yea, that's what I'll do. I'm seeing that the thing to do is probably turn DOWN the pump with higher flow injectors. Don't want to ask too much of that VE44, so bigger injectors will go on with the 12cm. It'll feel like a whole different truck! #ad
Just don't want to lose any MPG (depending on speed, I average 19-22 now. )
