well im starting to wonder if i want to put the money towards the transmission rebuild. i have dumped lots of cash fixing this truck and im not sure i want to do it anymore. i cant afford to have this truck down for repairs too often so maybe a newer one is for me. so if i decide to put up the for sale sign, what should i ask?

truck in sig.

things not in sig.

brand new pioneer cd and 6x9s. cant remember the brand but a reputable shop suggested them. 10" mtx sub, 300 watt amp. cobra cb w/4' firestick. tekosha brake controller. newer brakes all around, rotors, drums, cylinder upgrade. linex over rails. leer canopy. gooseneck ball. allied 888 wheels, 285's-half tread. both axles have had seals replaced in the past year. optima red tops-1 yr old. starter contacts upgraded.

the paint has lots of little scratchs but is not pealing. front bumper plastic in frowning. has grapefruit size dent in rear above wheel and a 1"tall x 10" long dent on rocker below CC window. interior is in good shape except for a tear in seat about 3" long and the headliner has one about half inch long. never smoked in.

let me know what you think. thanks

Hey Ben I know you've had some issues but what has cost you the most with your truck in recent times? Is there anything else besides the transmission you're concerned will cost you more $$?

What is wrong with the transmission? Just need a 5th gear upgrade? With a reputable shop your transmission job shouldn't be that expensive.

Look at me, I've thrown over $4k at my 383,000 mile truck lately doing clutch, transmission and now P-pump, so I say you oughta keep it :)

Vaughn

your a bad man vaughn. not really. you know it takes very little to convince me to keep it. i cant imagine any other truck would be much more dependable. i dont see anything else but a turbo costing me :D just kinda depressing when you gotta fix something instead of improve it. you know exactly what i mean.

Ben, if that is all you have done to the truck, outside of BOMBs, I'd keep it.

If you want to see a truck that will nickel and dime you, my Ford is the one. Heck, in the first 10k miles (only had 113k on it at the time I bought it), I had to put $2k in the dang thing. transmission, headgaskets, fuel supply pump, bearings, seals, fixing leaks,... ... ... ... ... ... . Well you get the idea. :( Having a hard time getting rid of it. Getting real close to parting it out. Might have chance to maybe break even on parts. Never should've bought the dang thing.

The Dodge on the other hand, VERY reliable. :D

This depends a lot on what and how you use your truck. With only 166k you can still put a lot of miles on it - or eat it when you try to sell a high mileage vehicle.

I recently evolved back to a 97 12v. The 04 was an incredible road machine, by far the best cruiser of any CTDs I've had. Plus, the longer rear springs were smooth on washboard. But I love tinkering on my 12v and plan on keeping her til she drops - that's why I call her my "tar baby" - I'm stuck with her now.

But I had enough of wasting my money on payments, when there are other things that I plan on putting my money toward, e. g. more property. Our home, car, and, apartments are paid off so it wasn't a matter of making the payments. I've always driven trucks or similar SUVs. But I decided a solid used truck and a good gas mileage beater Subaru AWD wagon will work just fine fo my needs when I find the right car (missed a 95 for 3K this week :( )

Another factor is how dependent are you on the truck? Are you DOA if it doesn't start in the AM? I can just walk to work and let her sit until fixed. That is also why I'm looking for the Busrus for a back up and to drive when I have the 97 in pieces.

I still have some money to dump into this 97, that I had already dumped into the 04, e. g. gauges and ebrake. Plus, I'm enticed by the fancies, e. g. 300 injectors, plate, GSK springs, Pro Guard 7 filter, 4" exhaust, Dodgezilla, and US Gear overdrive. But I can do this when I have the extra bucks - or change my mind. Can't do that with payments, i. e. put it off until spring or you find a good deal.

PS: the grass aint always greener. ;)

I Say She Stays!!!!

1. your transmission is the # 1 upgrade you can do to your truck IMHO. Dont look at it as having to put a transmission in the DANG THING. Look at it NOW I CAN JUSTIFY PUTTING IN A NEW transmission! Oo.

2. Yes,you may have put some $$ in it but YOU know whats been done, its been done RIGHT, and what it lacks.

3. BIGGER TRUCK PAYMENT. Let alone if you do any BoMB's, that new truck with a bigger payment just became you new truck with a bigger payment, thats no longer under warranty. ;)

keep the girl

I have a 2002 and this year I had to put in about $15,000 to $23,000 in to her on parts and repairs and I will not give her up. I say why buy a new one when in 3 month you will have to spend money on her any way. keep the old girl. you can spend $50,000 to $ 60,000 on a new one and have $900 to $1000 payments each month or $4000 in parts I would take the $4000. Good luck and keep trucking!!!!!!!!!!

well this seems to be a no brainer. i pull an enclosed trailer everyday for work, im a flooring contractor. not truck means no income so dependability is a must. on the plus side, shes only failed to start once and thats cause the batteries were finally dead. i owe 9k on truck with 3. 5 years left on loan at 277/month. couldnt find a decent replacement for less than 450/month. it sure seems that alot of people end up trading there 24valves for a 12ver. drove an 03 SO 5spd and while it stops and steers great i couldnt see driving it daily. i guess nothing compares to a bombed rig. thanks for the advice. i go throught this every time something comes up. at least i know what wrong and what on its way out.

Good Choice

Cant beat a dodge and especially a 12v. I had three 12v lined up to look at before I had the money to upgrade from my 94 chevy gasser and when the money rolled in, the 12v were all gone. Never been so mad!! I ended up with the truck in my sig. Runs good but I wish it were a 12v Oo.
