Here's my existing truck:

98. 5 2500 extended cab shortbed 4X4 w/ 4. 10

5spd manual with South Bend Con FE

24valve cummins with 3 week old VP44, lift pump and ECM

Van Aiken timing box

TST Powermax 3 adjustable

custom 4" exhaust to single 5" stack

BHAF

and alot of money tied up in both interior and exterior goodies

My plans were a bigger turbo and some stage 4 or 5 injectors.

Need help deciding whether to sell it to a friend of mine that wants it as is and buy me a 12valve or keep it. Im looking at another $2K for injectors and turbo if i keep it. Ive been considering an auto 12valve for 6 months or so. What kind of cost would I be looking at to bomb a 12vavle in the comparable or higher HP/Torque range of my truck assuming i had the injectors and a bigger turbo. The bomb bug hit me hard and I want a quick truck, but I dont want to go broke makin it that way, so if I buy a 12vavle Id lean toward an earlier 94 or 95 model. Help me out guys fire away let me have it thats why I asked.

Well I'll don my flaming suit and jump in here for you... .

Actually after seeing many of both trucks dynoed and the numbers put up its actually a toss up in my mind. They are quite comparable in money spent for mods and it depends on where you want to end up for power as which is actually the better route.

With what you have done to it now why sell it?. It will be hard to recoup the work done already and you have a good baseline to begin with. Meaning you know the truck already and are familiar with it and it little quirks. 500 hp+ can be made with the plug-n-play trucks while using the VP pump and if bad weather sneaks in all you do is switch it off to facilitate easier driving.

While a good stout 500 hp 12 can be done easily also it will mean getting allot dirtier doing the work. These properly valved trucks are not plug-n-play deals and can be a hand full in bad weather to drive after bombing. It leads to us using the smaller lever more often to prevent problems, even in rain. . LOL.

So where does that lead us,here of course. It comes down to this. . If you truck is optioned the way you want it and the color you desire why sell it?. Lots of your time, work and money will not be recouped for the next one. Since yours has already a new fueling system and ecm,add a pusher pump, good injectors, a good turbo(or turbos) and your off to where you want to go in a short time.

Your truck, your choice and your wallet... ... ... Andy

Andy just gave you very good advise... .

unless your after extream power ... . there is no reason to change... IF HVAC can run at 600+++ for many many months on the street before he got a "work truck" and retired the racer to a flat bed existance then most others can run 400-500 all day with little advanced wear and tear... and there are a bunch of guys in the 500+ range 24 valvers out there now running daily rigs

I like the 12 vlaves and have considered getting one as a secondary vehicle to play with also. But I do not believe I would trade my 24 valve for one, unless the price was right. Especially after I get finished with doing my transmission upgrade. I have officially decided this truck will probably never leave my hands once I drop this much money in the trans. :D

No one has added that you'll have to do the trans in the proposed 12 valve at about $4K, before you start building your 'quick truck'.

I've got one of each and there's lots to be said for both of them, but there's much more thrills with the newer truck. It lights off like it's mad and ready to chew nails while the older one, even with it's plate, springs, sticky trans, and exhaust is always sedate ((boring).

With the 24 valve you can plug your desired power level in or out in a few minutes. With the 12 valve you've got to make a series of changes which take time and are more permanent.

Also, the 12 valve trucks are all getting old and high milage so you'll spend a lot more time and money fixing Dodge things that don't make you go faster.

My poor old Sickly Ram is high mileage, old, boring, and sedate.

It also has the proper, correct number of valves :D

Properly valved Rams rule

Overvalved Rams drool

;)

[wonder if that will stir things up :) ]

Gee, that's real original. ;)

should i sell the 24valve for 12vavle?

YES. .

if you want a more reliable truck. and if you don't want to be a slave to that friggin computer and all of the electronics... ...

i have had my 24 valver for more than a year now, and like it although i do miss the 12 valver, there is something more intimate a more conforting feel about that old 12 valver it gave me the confidence to trust it in just about any situation, it has more off idel torque basically balls, as soon as you let the clutch out it felt like a tractor motor, i think due to computer controlled timing of the 24 valve it causes the motor to have less off idel torque, it also is really loud after starting in cold weather almost sounds damaging to the engine, again I think another timing related issue. if i could trade I would drop a 12 valve in any day, to me they sound better too. although this new truck really pulls the hell out of my trailer at 80+mph something the 12 valve would be defueling and running out of breath doing, i think a nice fueling box would solve alot of my inferior 24 valve feelings

Hell No!!!

The 24Valve sounds sharp/clear, caint explain exactly, but put them side by side and you'll hear what im talkin about.

Just gave away a 98 12V for 13k had 86K on it,banks powerpack.

Now I get 20. 1MPG doin 71, @ 60 I get 24+, its almost a joke...

All these 12V' ers are kidding you, Its wasn't cheap for my upgrade, but im Very Happy...

I like the 12 valvers because timing. 12 valvers can be alot cleaner than those nasty 24valvers. I like how those 24s sound, but hell when you put that timing at about 30 they sound the same.

I have a 12 and a 24. Thay are idenical except the 12 has 4X4. Both bombed. The 12 has always had better low end dig even when the 24 was bombed more. I have had no problems with my 12 and can't keep a vp44 in the 24. The 12 will also get better milage inspite of the 4X4. I will say thought that stock it got much lower millage. But after timing and a DTT it gets about 2 better than the 24. 12v rules
