No Getrag

Getrag is the 5 speed manual overdrive transmission. If you have the 3 speed auto in 89 it was the 727 non overdrive transmission. Higher speed would be obtained with a tighter torque converter and/or swapping into a 518 overdrive transmission. I had that option wired to a dash switch to turn OD on or off for a while. No computer needed if you want to run it that way. I am not sure what other mods would be necessary with that swap though. Longer tailshaft? Driveline length changes?

Have fun with it! Somehow with these things logic gets lost and fun gets injected. :D

Not sure about Helm? Contact Cummins, I am sure they have something specific to your needs. Cost? Their engine book is a small 4X8" notebook affair that fits in your glovebox. Good info. If you need the scanned info, let me know. Cummins Rocky Mountain charges over $150 for this service. I dont know how much you can save but it will still be in your pocket, not someone elses=). GH

If you have the 3. 07 ratio (I am so envious, but I passed on a 3. 07 for a Dana80, so I aint complaining), you should see more than 70mph. More like 78-85, depending on RPMs your engine is set to. If you do the math, the 3. 07 nonOD is real similar in final ratio to a 4. 10 OD. My 91 would do 90 in 5th with 4. 10s and turning 3100rpm.

SO, you may have transmission issues- tighter converter will help. Increasing your line pressures will also (dont ask me HOW, I just know WHAT) help get more power to the wheels.

I'm still looking into the transmission but I had my muffler chopped off last week. It sounds good but its not as loud as I hoped it would be. In an attempt to save some money because full exhaust kits and installation is expensive (I want it welded and I'm no welder), what if I had a y-pipe put in as close to the downpipe as possible and a second 3" pipe coming out? Do you guys think that would give me the loudness I'm looking for? :D

And I ordered the Borgeson steering shaft last night! Oo.

I had a '90 with the 3-speed and 3. 07s and yes the top speed sucks! No lockup on that TC unfortunately. If you want a higher top speed get a tighter converter from DTT or swap to the 4-speed auto.

Thank You!!!

KMSCD,

First & foremost, thank you for your service to our great & fantastic country!!!

I also own an '89, a W250 with 3 speed auto. And yes, the accelerator can cramp the foot on longer drives. There is a TSB for this problem: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1990/14-02-90.htm

Actually that entire web site is a great one to go through.

Also, check for play in all the linkage connection points for the accelerator and injection pump as loose joints will not allow full travel.

When I bought the truck the PO had removed the muffler, sounds good and not too loud even when pulling a heavy trailer.

The 16cm exhaust housing is a great mod!

Godspeed!

KMSCD,

IIRC I used a reciprocating saw (commonly known as a sawzall) to cut diagonally throught one side of the power screw sleeve and then turned the screw 180 and did the same on the other side. After carefully cutting most of the way through the sleeve without getting into the screw thread I used pliers and screwdriver to pry it off.

Have you looked at Geno's Garage website? They have the Dodge factory manual available for the '89.

BTW, I am jealous. Mine is not an LE.

You're welcome and thank you!

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into what the shops up here can do with my transmission before looking into a swap. Its a good transmission but I like road trips, if nothing else, anyone install an aftermarket cruise control on a 1st gen?

If you want louder, you can cut the pipe right before the tailpipe. If you look, you'll see a crush in the tailpipe over the rear axle. It acts not only to restrict flow, but also to deaden some of the sound. I cut mine off before the muffler for "testing" purposes, and have yet to reconnect it all.

Thanks! I think I'll give that a try first!

Okay, I hacked off the pipe before the rear axle. I think its a little louder and I can definitely hear the turbo more but I'm just not sure its loud enough... :-laf

Time for 4" then. Maybe a shorty- exit right in front of the rear tire, Or just put a turn down right behind the cab.
