Here I am

Should my 04.5 have a rattle sound during mid range rpm's?

Do all of the ctd 600's have a rattling noise in the engine? I know its a diesel and there will be some noise, but this doesn't sound right. Not at idle, only during acelleration or cruising. It's not a loose part or shifting noise. Sounds ****ty like a powerstroke engine.

Hmmm... hard to say. Can you describe the noise a little better? Maybe make a recording?

First, eliminate the simple things... change somewhere in the cab rattling, something in the glove box, loose item under the hood.

Mine does it too (it almost sounds like spark plug ping) ,but I think it is the injectors opening. After driving my '94 for ten years this truck is so quite it might be the clock ticking.

Yea, I would like to know if it"s normal or something that can be fixed. Do all of them sound like this? Maybe I'll have to drive another one to do a comparason.

Thanks for your input.

Mine made a pinging sound for a while after I got it, but now I don't hear it anymore. Either I got used to it, or it went away with the use of Power Service fuel treatment. There have been many reports of the noise, and appears to be totally normal.

Yea... . Mine does that too. Sounds like a gas engine pinging. Doesn't do it at cruising speed. Its got less than 300 miles so I am sure once its broken in it will go away. Bothered me at first but I am sure its normal. I suppose I'm more used to my Cummins in my Freightliner at work and the noises that makes.

Rattlin'

That rattling you hear is most likely engine knock. My 600 does it as well, since new, and only has 4,000 miles. It sounds just like a pinging noise from a low octane gasoline. IMO, it is a symptom of the 325/600 piston/combustion design in order to make emissions. I think we have to learn to live with it, or hope that it goes away with more break-in.

Mine Does it Too

I was wondering the same thing because mine does it too and like you guys are hoping it will go away after breakin and doing some mods. I hear mine most under hard acceleration around 2500 rpm.

This question comes up so often here, it seems like it would be a good idea for Dodge to make note of it in the owner's manual.

Maybe Steve can add a top to the 3rd gen FAQ section for this.
