Should Pigs Be Genetically Altered To Provide Body Parts For Humans?

Thanks, TDR Staff

I think I was sent a virus today...

I've heard that pigs are pretty close, genetically, to humans and in some cases I think that's true. What do you guys think of the possibility of raising hybrid pigs to use in getting replacement organs for humans?

Pigs?

Hell Doc, I've gone from moon rocks to pig parts! I just got through posting to your moon question. How's the drug problem?

Doc, I need some of those chemicals, man! :D As a man I am already viewed by the feminazi's of the world as a pig. No need to give them legitimate ammunition for their nutcase views. Now I do hear that pigs have 30 minute orgasms  Hmmm... ... .

pig parts

We already use pig parts on people. A large number of heart valve replacements are done with pig valves. Each valve has an average life of a little over ten years, some longer. Otherwise a mechanical valve is used. An advantage of the pig valve is that no blood thinners are needed for the long-term as they are for a mechanical valve (such as the St Jude valve).

Pig organs as replacements for human organs do sound good for those people who need a transplant but will die without one. They don't work any better than human organs, but they might keep some people alive for a while longer when a human organ is not available. The most promising shot for the pig organ is the liver. Healthy human livers for transplant are REALLY hard to come by. But heck, you could work a package deal, buy the whole pig, and have a big ol' sandwich after you got out of the hospital. (gross --- I know).

Doc is kinda gettin out there with issues. Doc: do you need a heart or a liver? I'll keep my eyes open for some organs.

Just my medical 2 cents.

Bomb on ladies and gentlemen
