Shouldn't the 2019+ be considered 5th Gen?

Lots of discussion on this, but I don't think it should. I don't even think the changes warrant a .5 designation.

Look at 3rd gens.

05-06 was a grill/dash redesign and stayed 3rd gen.
06-07 was a MAJOR engine change and stayed 3rd gen.

So if you consider the changes from 05-07 all that happened in 1 year from 18-19. Not a generation change, just a face-lift and motor work.

5th gen will be a different cab, and many other changes to make it a 5th gen.

AFAIK this is a 5 gen truck.
True about the CGI engine, but I think the whole truck is new, especially the cab.

If it were up to me, I would say it is a 5th gen.

If we base what constitutes a generation change being, body, chassis and engine, I feel of those, the body is the least important. Since the chassis and engine have been redesigned (and transmissions to a lesser extent) and the body is the only thing remaining....at its slightly altered too, I would consider it a generation change.

In the end however, it's just words and it really doesn't matter.

The cab is not all new. It's like an 06.. different headlights and dash on the same cab.

The cab will be all new for the real 5th gen in a few years.

Sure it's the next generation of ISB, but so was the 6.7 and we didn't get a new generation truck out of that.

The ‘18 1500 is a clean sheet. Sat in one at the NYIAS, and it is totally different. I also checked out a ‘18 HD truck at the same show, and the door/ B pillar is surely 4 gen. The ‘19 HD takes after the 1500, and is surely a 5 gen truck.

With the '19's I have been around I didn't notice any door/cab changes behind the fenders/hood. Even the press releases I've read talk about no changes behind the A-pillar.

This has been hashed out so many times. I have come to agree with TDR staff who settled on Gen 4.5, personally. The cab structure is the same, so it doesn't have the extra room and flat floor of the Gen 5. Forward of the A Pillars is new. Frame is heavily revised, driveline is revised pretty substantially especially on the duallies. The Cummins, despite same displacement, has enough new stuff to be considered new, IMHO.

Again, I don't have a strong opinion. I think it's worthy of 4.5 designation. If folks call my truck a Gen 4, that's OK with me.

I gotta admit, I’ve never looked at them (including a ‘19 HD) this close.
I’ve always assumed the pattern that the HD truck followed right behind the LD truck redesign. They did a great job with the nose treatments. Really fooled me.
So we agree that the 1500 is a 5 gen? Because it really felt totally different when I sat in one. The B pillar/ doors/ rear cab profile look way different.

Yes. Ram even calls it the "All New 1500", a phrase they haven't used on the '19 HD's.

Had the factory tour in Columbus, IN in June. It's an entirely new engine. IMHO That's why those looking for 4th Gen 6.7 related info must exclude the 2019+.

P.S. Just picked up our brandy new 2018 today. It will be a while before I stop clicking on the 3rd Gen site...

It's funny how much of an issue this is. Even Cummins website changed their wording regarding thier 2019 6.7L motor. Previous wording went something to the affect "for the next generation Ram." I guess they didn't realize they stepped in a hot steamy dookie and changed it.

Looking back at Ram's generation naming process, seems it was/is linked more to body style changes than mechanical ones.

I dont loose sleep over it or anything, but I see enough change in the HDs to call it 5th Gen.

I'm pretty sure a world conference could form to address this earth shaking issue, AND, with enough beers and BBQ, could reach consensus.

But for now, it doesn't have a home. Maybe MY2019+ named forum?

OK, next world problem, which BBQ style is best? OH NO, this could make oil wars look pale in comparison. I actually likes em all. so while everyone else is debating, I'll just be eating and nodding occasionally.

I'm big on brisket, chicken and spare ribs (TX STYLE), but every so often I like a nice pork butt rubbed down with brown sugar, a little cayenne, some garlic powder, salt, black pepper, crushed red pepper and some mustard cooked low and slow (NORTH CAROLINA STYLE) pulled apart, drizzle with vinegar sauce (rub with apple cider vinegar), creamy cole slaw on a bun. Its soooooo good.

Doesn't matter so much other than everything lumped under 4th Gen, including C&Cs. Thats why for the purpose of the TDR forum names. be nice to add MY2019+. New 2019 owners are differentiating posts on their trucks by adding 2019 in the title in the 4th Gen Forum.

I'm more or less with you... I'm covered...my 2017 C&C works fine in the 4th Gen Forum. And we realized a while back TDR isn't going to follow naming forum sub categories with 4th Gen as they had done with previous gens.

So, all good... no worries about 2019+ not being assigned a gen category.
