I fired up me truck today only to hear "wack wack wack". I have shredded my third belt in 40K. I will take it in tomorrow for another warranty belt. I guess the reason for my post is to find out how many belts everyone else has gone through, or am I the only one that loses one every 15K. I read a post a year or so ago about a guy who kept one behind the seat- might be a good idea for me.

I am only on my second one in a 178,000. How does the alignment of the pullies look  Any burs or chips in the pully edges that could be ripping the belt a little at a time  Did a pully get dinged with a tool and not noticed?

Does every thing turn free when no belt is installed

13500 miles on mine, still in good shape. I had a new belt in my luggage when I flew up to Dave smith motors to pick up my truck last June. It is still under my back seat.

Mundgyver, alot of people with 04. 5 and 05 trucks have lost belts in the first 1500 hundred miles.

Have them install the overunning generator pulley before they install the new belt. That should help a bunch to keep the belt from shredding.

What Sag said. Tell them you want the TSB for belt chirp.

Yes, some of us here and on DTR with 04. 5s and 05s lost belt early on- my original went at on 5400 miles. At the time, there was no TSB, and they had no idea why it went, and threw a new one on.

I now have about 20,000 miles on the replacment, and I check it at least weekly. It looks fine - so far, so good (knock wood). But if it goes again, I'm having that pulley TSB performed.

This is probably completely unrelated but I had the same problem with my old first gen. The belt always tried riding up on the front of the a/c compressor pulley. After putting my third belt on figured I better do something about it,I figured the compressor was cocked. Started pulling a string around checking alignments, turned out the belt tensioner pulley was the problem. Put a shim between block and tensioner to staightened out. The belt went back to the center of the compressor pulley, and I never put on another belt. Just my 2 cents.

Went to dealer today. Belt was not covered on the 7/70. It is a part of the 3/36. Service manager said he doesn't just "replace belts" he was "going to find out why it failed". I began to think about the cost of a sticky AC pump or PS pump and figured I would have to shell out some serious coin. He then came back into the waiting room to tell me that everything looked ok and his tech said that some of these trucks shred belts because of the chirp when you shut them down. Anyways, had them replace the belt and do a transmission flush. The tab was big. I had them throw a second belt behind the seat so I don't get stranded and don't have to pay the $80 to have it installed again. He sold me the two belts at cost supposedly.

No mention of a TSB on this. I did not know about it until after I got home.

Sidenote: Trans acts a lot better with new fluid and filter. I don't know if it is a mental thing or what, but I like it better now... ... .

Hence, the TSB. While diesel belt chirp is normal on al brands, it DOES seem to strain the belts more on these 3rd gens. I would call them back up today, and make an appointment to take it back in and have the TSB performed. INSIST upon it.

IMO, they should have checked for TSBs before performing any procedures. My dealer does this.

Lethal, make sure (INSIST upon it) that they perform the TSB. Have them search the STAR database for it. Tell them that the belt was chirping badly recently, and they will be able to install the clutched pulley.

Please keep us posted.

Why don't all the 3g trucks shred the belts? Are there different alternators which have different rotational mass? Seems more likely there is a problem with a pulley finish (burr or seam or bad grooves etc) or misalignment issue.

A very good question which no one seems to have a definite answer for.

Here's your TSB "09-004-06"

Revised Pully part number (05183490AA).

Good luck

Mine just shreded today with 7040 miles on it, took out the crank sensor as well (still worked but was eaten away so they replaced it).

He checked the idler pully and it had a little play but no more than a new truck he checked.

From the above posts it seems the altenator pulley is the one that is causing the belt to shread?

Dodge dealer wanted 68 bucks for new belt (spare in case this happens again) is there a cummins belt or gates that would be better / cheaper than the mopar belt?
