Hi, I just spoke to my father and he is somewhere in AZ reporting that his truck "Jerks" (I think it's probably a shudder) a few times as it makes the shift into 4th. He is towing approximately 10k, has a 2002 3/4 ton 4x4 with the 47re, a banks E-brake, and an Edge computer...

Any ideas what would be causing this? Torque convertor failure?

and if so any recommendations of parts to replace it, and shops in the Vegas area?

Thanks

Dave

Something I had on my 01 was I had a bad rear ujoint. everytime my auto would shift it would vib and then smooth out. . Just something to check. . and simple if so...

I'm not really familiar with the issues involed, as I don't really plan on doing much except for driving my 2003 CTD... .

Was it the EDGE box, or the E-Brake that likely toasted the Torque Convertor? or a combination of both?

Thanks!

for now id unhook the edge box,he should be able toget to a good trans dealer under stock power. The trans is probalby on its way out,the TC and or 3rd gear more than likely. If he wants to run the edge box,and e brake the trans needs to be modified to handle the power, hes lucky he got this far with it.

if it's not a totally destroyed t/c (which in all probability it is at the VERY least that, running a box, towing heavy, AND trying to slow that much weight down through the stock transmission) then he might be lucky enough to only need a fluid change.

I had the sudder upon shift into 4th for the last 4k miles out of 10k. I had cheap fluid in my DTT and it was causing a shudder once it had been broken down some. Changed it last weekend and shudder is now gone! Course I'm still only using fluid that goes for $2. 50/quart, so not like I'm going all out on the high-end stuff. It's cheap to change your own transmission fluid, and is a cheap insurance for such an important thing. I change mine every 10k.

he needs to have someone look at the truck and the dealer will not be the best option with the mods on the truck.

They would probably try and void the whole warranty

thank you all for the ideas, I have forwarded them on to him. .

On a happier note, he did just receive my issue of the last TDR magazine that I sent off to him to give him a sample of what I got him for his birthday!!!

when you have the e brake on, the converter locked up, your foot off the throttle, and an extra 10,000lbs. behind you, you're looking at low line pressure... basically a reverse slippage.

throwing in an unlock switch could help to get you by if the shuddering gets worse.

good luck,

Tom

Diesel Specialits in North Las Vegas have my recommendation hands down. They will talk with you, they monitor the TDR, and have a clean shop that is professionally run.
